Sam Kerr marked her return to the starting lineup for Chelsea with a dazzling performance, scoring twice in the team’s emphatic 6-0 victory over St Polten. The match, held on March 15, 2024, propelled Chelsea to third place in the Women’s Champions League standings and showcased the team’s strength in the competition.

Kerr, who had been sidelined for nearly two years due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, made her presence felt on the pitch. She found the net in the 75th minute with a precise finish across the goalkeeper, Carina Schluter, and later added another goal during stoppage time with a header from Niamh Charles’ cross.

“It was good,” Kerr commented after the match. “I felt like I had to work myself into it. They did a good job of defending to be fair, they collapsed in the midfield. Luckily the ball fell to me and I have good team-mates around me.”

The Australian striker expressed her eagerness for more playing time, stating, “I prefer to play more. When you come on with 20 minutes to go, it can be hectic. I feel 100 percent, but I was out for a while, so I have to build myself up. Today was a good step. Being with the national team was a good step. I am definitely fit enough, but it is about getting the miles in my legs.”

Chelsea opened the scoring early in the match, just 12 minutes in. Sophia Smith, also known as Macario, slid the ball up to teammate Ellie Carpenter, who found Wieke Kaptein making a run into the box. Despite the home side’s defensive efforts, Kaptein managed to slip the ball past Schluter into the bottom corner.

A minute before halftime, Chelsea doubled their lead with Macario’s clinical finish, and she later added a penalty after the break. Kerr’s first goal since her comeback not only highlighted Chelsea’s dominance but also set the stage for a commanding finish.

In the closing moments of the match, Lauren James delivered a cross that was unfortunately deflected into her own net by Lisa Ebert. Kerr then capped off Chelsea’s impressive display with her second goal, sealing the scoreline at 6-0.

This victory reinforces Chelsea’s position as a formidable contender in the Women’s Champions League, showcasing a blend of returning talent and teamwork that has the potential to make a significant impact in the upcoming matches.
