Defender Ben Swift has made a significant return to football, signing with Sittingbourne after a two-year absence due to a serious knee injury. The 28-year-old last played competitively in November 2023 while with Tonbridge, when he sustained the injury that kept him off the pitch for an extended period. His comeback comes at a crucial time as Sittingbourne aims for promotion in the Isthmian South East division.

Swift’s journey back to fitness has been challenging, but he has maintained his physical condition. He previously gained attention as a promising talent when Aston Villa signed him from the Maidstone United academy. Known for his strong defensive qualities, Swift’s experience is expected to bolster Sittingbourne’s chances as they push for a play-off spot.

Swift’s Reintegration into the Team

Sittingbourne’s management, including manager Reece Prestedge and assistant manager Joe Anderson, who were former teammates with Swift at Margate, are eager to welcome him back to training. Anderson expressed excitement about the prospect of working with Swift again, stating, “He’s a very good player. We’re excited to work with him again.”

Swift has already demonstrated his commitment to returning to match fitness, having participated in a recent Hyrox event. Anderson noted, “He’s in shape… the knee’s plenty healthy enough to play, so it’s just getting him back on the ball.”

The partnership between Swift and teammate Jack Steventon is anticipated to be a strong one, as they share a personal connection outside of football, which could enhance their on-field chemistry.

Sittingbourne recently faced a setback in their last match, drawing 1-1 against Herne Bay after having fought back from a goal down. Anderson, who took charge during the game in Prestedge’s absence, reflected on the disappointment of not securing a second goal. He stated, “It was a tricky place to go… but I think we had more than enough to get a second goal.”

Looking Ahead: Training and Strategy

With a week free from back-to-back fixtures, Sittingbourne aims to take full advantage of their training sessions. Anderson highlighted the importance of consistent practice, stating, “It’s nice to have the Tuesday-Thursday to get some training done.” The team has already achieved impressive results under Prestedge, securing maximum points from their first five games since his appointment.

As Sittingbourne prepares for their upcoming match against Eastbourne Town on March 30, 2024, they remain in a competitive position, sitting fifth in the league standings. Anderson emphasized the need for the team to build on their recent momentum, saying, “They’ve taken care of business… but don’t rest on your laurels, be ready to kick on again.”

Anderson’s return to football, having previously played at Margate, marks a new chapter in his career as he transitions into coaching. He noted his preference for working with adult players rather than in youth academies, stating, “I thought dealing with men, I’d prefer to do that, rather than telling kids they aren’t good enough.”

As Swift continues his path back to competitive football, both he and Sittingbourne look forward to what promises to be an exciting chapter ahead.
