Cheerleading Squad of Seniors Dazzles Audiences in Watford
A unique cheerleading group, believed to be the oldest in Britain, has successfully completed its first public performance. The Mayfield Bells, comprised exclusively of women aged between 70 and 87, showcased their talent at the Harlequin shopping centre in Watford on Saturday. This vibrant squad, which formed in response to the inspiring film “Poms,” aims to promote joy and community among older adults.
The group’s founder, Marilyn Sylvester, who will celebrate her 82nd birthday in January, was motivated to start the team after watching the 2019 film starring Diane Keaton. The movie depicts a group of retired women who form a cheerleading squad, inspiring Sylvester to think, “We could do this. And we’re doing it.”
The Mayfield Bells, adorned in festive black Santa hats and wielding pom-poms, spent approximately eight weeks rehearsing for their debut. With the assistance of BBC Three Counties Radio, they secured a stage at the shopping centre, where they performed in front of an enthusiastic audience. Initial concerns about attendance quickly dissipated as many shoppers stopped to watch and record the performance on their phones.
After the show, Sylvester expressed her feelings of elation and emotional fulfillment. “Who would’ve thought from a soppy idea like that it would get so well known and people would want to see us,” she remarked. Her excitement was palpable as she reflected on the unexpected positive reception, adding, “It might make us famous being in here.”
The performance not only highlighted the group’s talent but also underscored the message that it is never too late to embark on new hobbies. Sylvester emphasized the importance of laughter and community engagement, stating, “It’s good for you and we laugh – and laughing is the best, best tonic for everybody.”
The idea of auditioning for reality television also surfaced, with Sylvester jokingly suggesting that the squad could compete on Britain’s Got Talent. “They’ve got terrible acts there, so we’d fit in really well – we could even win it!” she exclaimed.
This heartwarming initiative not only entertains but also serves as a reminder of the vitality and capabilities of older adults. The Mayfield Bells are set to continue their journey, spreading joy and energy through cheerleading, while inspiring others to embrace new experiences at any age.
