Lithuania Seeks NATO Support to Strengthen Air Defenses Amid Drone Threats

Lithuania has formally requested NATO’s assistance to bolster its air defenses following the incursion of a drone from Belarus that crashed in a military training area. The incident, which occurred on July 28, 2023, involved a drone carrying 2 kilograms of explosives, prompting Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė and Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys to send a letter to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The officials called for the deployment of additional capabilities, potentially even experimental technologies, to address emerging aerial threats.

Šakalienė emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that “similar incidents are likely to continue as long as Russia’s war against Ukraine goes on.” The drone, which took approximately a week for the Lithuanian military to locate, is suspected to have been misdirected towards Kyiv but inadvertently entered Lithuanian airspace. Authorities are currently investigating the incident, with Šakalienė clarifying, “While there is no reason to believe that the drone was deliberately launched into Lithuanian territory, we absolutely must respond to the fullest extent.”

Growing Concerns Along NATO’s Eastern Border

The recent drone incursion marks a worrying trend, as air attacks on Ukraine have intensified, raising the likelihood of similar incidents along NATO’s eastern border. Lithuania’s government is not alone in its concerns; similar drone incursions have been reported in neighboring countries, including Poland, Romania, and Latvia. Budrys described the situation as a “concern of all NATO,” urging a collective response to what he termed “new types of threats.”

“This is not just Lithuanian airspace, not just Lithuania’s security — it is NATO airspace, NATO security and also EU security,” Budrys stated, highlighting the broader implications of these security challenges.

The drone that crashed on July 28 was the second such incident within the same month. Earlier, on July 10, a Russian Gerbera drone also crossed into Lithuania from Belarus, crashing approximately one kilometer inside the country’s territory. These events underscore the pressing need for enhanced air defense systems as tensions continue to escalate in the region.

As NATO allies consider Lithuania’s request, the alliance’s response will likely set a precedent for how member countries address aerial threats in an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape. The ongoing investigation into the recent drone incidents will be crucial in determining the necessary measures to ensure the security of Lithuania and its NATO partners.
