Nations Commemorate 80th Anniversary of VJ Day on August 15

People across the United Kingdom and beyond will commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on August 15, 2025. This observance marks Japan’s surrender to the Allies, effectively bringing an end to World War II. While the country celebrated VE Day earlier this year, which marked the surrender of German forces on May 8, 1945, the contributions and sacrifices made in the Asia-Pacific theatre often receive less attention.

VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, is significant in understanding the full impact of World War II. The war in the Asia-Pacific region continued even after the celebrations of VE Day, with conflict persisting until Japan’s surrender six days after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. According to the Royal British Legion, over 200,000 people lost their lives as a direct result of the bombings and subsequent radiation sickness.

Local Commemorations Across the UK

In cities like Liverpool, various events are planned to honor this pivotal moment in history. A Service of Remembrance will take place at the Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) Repatriation Memorial on the Pier Head at 10:30 AM. The service will be led by The Revd Canon Bill Addy of Liverpool Parish Church. Notably, civic buildings such as Liverpool Town Hall, St George’s Hall, and the Cunard Building will be illuminated in red, white, and blue on the evening of August 15.

Furthermore, Cunard’s newest ship, Queen Anne, will dock at Liverpool Cruise Port as part of its journey through the Iceland and British Isles. The ship’s presence will serve as a poignant reminder of the Cunard fleet’s role during the war, with vessels like the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth being repurposed for troop transport.

A National Reflection on Sacrifice and Service

On the national stage, King Charles will address the nation with a pre-recorded message acknowledging the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. This address will precede a remembrance service at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, where the King, along with veterans, including those who served in the Asia-Pacific theatre, will lay floral tributes.

The ceremony, organized in collaboration with the Government, will also feature a national two-minute silence, honouring the sacrifices of many, including Burma Star recipients and former prisoners of war. The service will be broadcast live by the BBC, ensuring that the contributions of those who fought in key battles, such as Kohima and Imphal, are remembered.
