Ruben Amorim Boosts Confidence as Man Utd Prepares for Season Opener
Ruben Amorim, the head coach of Manchester United, expressed increased confidence in his squad as they prepare for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 13, 2023. Following a tumultuous previous season, which culminated in a disappointing 15th-place finish—the club’s worst performance in over five decades—there is a renewed sense of optimism at Old Trafford.
Amorim has made significant changes to the team since the end of last season, both in terms of player personnel and overall mindset. The head coach acknowledged that he had approached many matches last season with a sense of foreboding, fully aware of his squad’s limitations. This time around, he feels more prepared, saying, “I know that we are training harder, we are training better, so I know that we are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game.”
New Signings and a Fresh Start
Manchester United has bolstered its roster through strategic signings during the transfer window. New arrivals such as Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon are expected to contribute significantly to the team’s success this season. Amorim highlighted the importance of integrating these new players into the squad, stating, “We have new players that we need to understand in the real game what they are capable of.”
Despite the positive changes, Amorim remains realistic about the challenges ahead. He commented, “It is hard to know what we will deliver because we cannot change everything in four weeks, but we are better.” The team is still a work in progress, and Amorim is focused on gradual improvement as they aim to return to European competition.
United’s last season saw them finish with a record low, but Amorim is determined to foster a more competitive spirit. “We want to focus game by game. If we are thinking now about how we are going to finish the season it is a problem,” he said, emphasizing the need for a step-by-step approach. The immediate goal is clear: a win against Arsenal on Sunday.
Facing Former Players and New Challenges
The match against Arsenal will also feature Viktor Gyokeres, a striker who flourished under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon. Gyokeres joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon after making a name for himself in Europe, and Amorim acknowledged the challenges posed by a player with such talent. “It’s a different league,” he commented on Gyokeres’ transition. “The physicality is different.”
As Manchester United gears up for the new season, Amorim’s confidence is palpable. He recognizes the effort required to compete with established teams but remains optimistic about the potential of his refreshed squad. “We need to be realistic with our fans. We are going to have to fight a lot because there’s a lot of good teams with more time than us together, but we are going to fight for it.”
With the season opener just days away, all eyes will be on Old Trafford as Manchester United aims to reclaim its standing in the Premier League and embark on a campaign filled with renewed hope.
