Clarkson Calls Out Trump’s Claim on Inheritance Tax During Debate

Jeremy Clarkson has voiced his strong disapproval of comments made by former US President Donald Trump, which were highlighted during a discussion with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in Scotland last month. The exchange focused on inheritance tax (IHT) implications for farmers, with Trump asserting that he had significantly reduced the tax burden on American farmers while in office.
A video clip circulated online showing Trump emphasizing how he “looked after” family-run farms by eliminating the estate tax. He described farmers as often being “land rich and cash poor,” explaining that the tax burden could lead to financial ruin for families inheriting farms. “When a parent leaves a farm to the kids, they do not have to worry about their local banker coming in and stealing their farm,” Trump stated. He argued that the estate tax had caused many farmers to face dire consequences, including financial hardship and even suicide.
Clarkson Responds with One-Word Reaction
In response to the video, Clarkson, who operates Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds, was quick to share his thoughts on social media. He labeled Trump’s claims as “Bulls**t,” reflecting his skepticism towards the portrayal of the inheritance tax issue. This reaction came shortly after a report from Centax indicated that IHT rules had little effect on farmers.
Starmer, defending the UK government’s stance, highlighted the differences between the US and UK tax systems. He explained that the UK Treasury’s proposal of a 20% IHT could be paid over several years, resulting in an additional 2% per year over a decade. Moreover, he noted that the government has implemented measures to ensure farmers’ incomes are prioritized in trade agreements, including the proposed UK-US trade deal.
Public Reactions and Criticism of Starmer
This incident highlights the ongoing debate surrounding tax policies and their impact on farmers, particularly in the context of inheritance issues. As discussions continue, both leaders face scrutiny over their respective positions and the implications for the agricultural sector.
