Suranne Jones and Laurence Akers: A Look Inside Their Journey
Suranne Jones is set to captivate audiences with her role as the British Prime Minister in Netflix’s new series, Hostage. The show revolves around her character’s husband being kidnapped, showcasing an intense narrative that contrasts sharply with her personal life. Outside the spotlight, Suranne enjoys a quieter existence with her husband, Laurence Akers, a former scriptwriter and magazine editor.
The couple’s relationship, while currently harmonious, has roots in a “complicated” beginning. They first crossed paths in 2013 at the wedding of fellow actress Sally Lindsay. Interestingly, at the time, Laurence was being introduced to television star Carol Vorderman. In a 2024 interview with the Mirror, Suranne recalled that she had asked a former colleague to set her up with someone at the wedding.
Laurence humorously noted the awkwardness of the situation, sharing, “My mates were trying to pair me off with Carol Vorderman.” Their first encounter was marked by a dance floor moment. Suranne described how Laurence approached her but ended up dancing with another actor, saying, “I thought, ‘Oh, he’s very funny’.” After exchanging numbers, a connection blossomed.
By 2015, just two years after their initial meeting, the couple celebrated their marriage in a private ceremony at Islington Town Hall. Reports indicate that Laurence, who is ten years Suranne’s senior, proposed merely six weeks after they met. Despite their swift romance, Laurence admitted that their early relationship was challenging as he was still living with an ex-partner.
Reflecting on that period, he stated, “Suranne said it sounded complicated and to call her once it was sorted. It gave me the motivation to finally move out.” This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a new chapter for both of them.
In March 2016, Suranne and Laurence welcomed their first child, a son, although they have chosen to keep his name private. Suranne’s preference for privacy became evident when she made a surprise appearance on the red carpet of the National Television Awards, showcasing her baby bump, which caught many off guard.
Speaking about motherhood during a 2017 appearance on This Morning, Suranne expressed her joy, stating, “I love being a mum. It is the best.” She also discussed the challenges of balancing her career with parenting, emphasizing the responsibility she feels as a working mother. “I’m constantly trying to balance my life and my career,” she explained, highlighting the relatable struggles many parents experience.
During the pandemic, the couple expanded their family by adopting two dachshund puppies, further enriching their home life. They currently reside in Muswell Hill, London, where they maintain a low profile, focusing on family and personal happiness.
Suranne Jones and Laurence Akers’ journey illustrates the complexities of love and commitment, from a “complicated” start to building a family together. Their story resonates with many, capturing the essence of navigating personal and professional lives while cherishing the bonds that unite them.
