Ann Ming Shares Emotional Response to ITV’s ‘I Fought the Law’

ITV’s new drama, I Fought the Law, chronicles the poignant journey of Ann Ming, a mother who fought for justice following the murder of her daughter, Julie Hogg. The four-part series explores Ann’s tireless 15-year campaign to overturn the double jeopardy law, which initially allowed Julie’s killer to evade prosecution.
At a recent Q&A session in London, Ann Ming expressed her emotional reaction to the series, which features BAFTA-winning actress Sheridan Smith in the lead role. Describing the experience as “a difficult watch,” Ann revealed, “I watched all four episodes and I cried all the way through it.” She commended Smith’s portrayal, stating, “Nobody could have played it better.”
Story Background and Impact
I Fought the Law dramatizes the tragic events surrounding Julie Hogg’s murder in 1989 in Billingham, Teesside. Julie, only 22 at the time, vanished after finishing her shift at a local pizza restaurant. After an agonising wait of 80 days, Ann discovered her daughter’s body hidden in the bathroom of her home.
The series, penned by Jamie Crichton, known for his work on All Creatures Great and Small and Grantchester, portrays Ann’s relentless pursuit of justice. Faced with numerous police failings, she pressured authorities to reveal the truth and bring her daughter’s murderer to justice. Ann’s campaign was marked by extraordinary determination, challenging the Crown Prosecution Service and engaging in debates with prominent defence barristers, as well as interacting with government officials, including two Home Secretaries.
“Driven by love, grief, and extraordinary determination, Ann and her family campaign tirelessly in Julie’s name,” the series synopsis states.
Cast and Viewing Information
Alongside Sheridan Smith, I Fought the Law features a talented cast, including Marlowe Chan-Reeves from Doctor Who, Olivia Ng from Phoenix Rise, and Jake Davies from Grace. Other notable actors include Victoria Wyant, Kent Riley, Jack James Ryan, Andrew Lancel, and Rufus Jones.
The series is set to premiere on August 31, 2023, airing on ITV and STV. Viewers will also have the opportunity to stream the episodes on ITVX and STV Player.
As Ann Ming reflects on her profound journey, I Fought the Law not only sheds light on her personal battle but also brings attention to broader issues within the justice system. It serves as a reminder of the strength of a mother’s love and the lengths one will go to seek justice.
