Reform UK Rejects Boris Johnson, Critiques Immigration Policies

Zia Yusuf, the head of policy for Reform UK, has firmly stated that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson will never be welcomed into the party. He described Johnson as “one of the worst prime ministers in British history” and accused him of failing the very voters who supported Brexit. Yusuf’s comments were made during an interview on Sky News’s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips.

Yusuf criticized Johnson for what he termed the “Boris wave,” a reference to the significant increase in non-European Union immigration following the new visa policies implemented after Brexit. He remarked, “He threw open our borders. The Boris wave, which is millions and millions of non-EU migrants flooding into the country post-Brexit, betrayed every single person that voted Brexit.” His harsh assessment underscores a growing discontent among some factions of the British political landscape regarding immigration policies.

In a related discussion, Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, expressed skepticism about the possibility of Johnson joining their ranks. Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Farage acknowledged his personal admiration for Johnson but stated, “Oh, I don’t think that would really work, somehow.” He echoed Yusuf’s sentiments, highlighting the public’s feelings regarding immigration costs, stating, “Millions of people allowed, being allowed into Britain, most of whom, by the way, don’t even work, and are costing us a fortune.”

Despite the internal criticism, Farage addressed a significant challenge that his party faces. He noted the lack of government-level experience within Reform UK, pointing specifically to Nadine Dorries, who he believes can provide the necessary expertise. Farage stated, “That is our biggest weakness. You could ask me lots of questions about policy and personnel… but I haven’t got anybody in the senior team that’s ever been there before.” He emphasized that Dorries’ recent addition to the party could help bridge this gap.

The Labour Party chairwoman, Anna Turley, responded to Farage’s comments by stating that his party lacks a coherent plan for the country. She criticized him for admitting that his team is not equipped to govern, saying, “’Don’t know’ answers won’t solve the problems the country faces.” Turley concluded that British voters deserve better leadership.

Meanwhile, Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake dismissed the idea of an alliance between Johnson and Reform UK, countering that it is “not going to happen.” During an interview, he expressed his disagreement with Dorries’ views on the potential partnership and emphasized the need for concrete solutions to the country’s financial woes. Hollinrake highlighted the current economic challenges, noting a significant annual deficit, stating, “You’re talking about spending commitments, nearly £300 billion a year more than we’re collecting in taxes. This is simply impossible.”
