Instructors Owen Lennon, 43, Amy Cottom, 29, and Reilly Taylor, 42, guide both novice and experienced skaters around the rink. Their diverse backgrounds have united them through a shared passion for skating. Amy, reflecting on her journey, stated, “There was a big spike in roller skating just after COVID, and I thought it looked fun. I bought some skates, practiced in my kitchen, and then discovered this rink opening. It was unreal.”

Owen’s interest in skating was reignited when his wife encouraged him to join beginner classes. “I had a background in rollerblading but took a step back as life got busier,” he explained. “Listening to the music and connecting with skating again made me fall in love with it all over again.” Reilly also found his way to the community, recounting how he started at a gay roller disco in Manchester and later met Owen, which helped him integrate into the Liverpool skating scene.

The trio has developed a popular online presence, launching the Instagram community page, Invisible Skate Tribe. Owen noted, “I found people were asking me how to do things, and I started teaching classes on Sundays. I’ve been doing that for about 18 months now.”

Classes at Rollerdome cater to a wide range of abilities. Every Thursday evening at 18:30, Amy leads beginner classes, providing newcomers with a warm welcome and essential skills. Afterward, the Rhythm & Roll Skate session commences, allowing skaters to express themselves freely on the rink. “It’s suited for everyone, no matter your skill level,” Amy emphasized. “You don’t feel like you’re exercising, but you are. It’s such a fun way to dance and socialize.”

Reilly supports Amy and helps newcomers adapt to roller skating. “Amy’s class has grown significantly, and it’s rewarding to help others learn and enjoy skating,” he remarked. Together, they create an inclusive environment that encourages participants to enjoy the activity, regardless of experience.

The impact of this roller skating community extends beyond mere recreation; it has been transformative for many involved. Owen reflected, “I didn’t think it would, but it’s changed my life. I’ve made a whole new group of friends, which I never expected.” Reilly echoed this sentiment, sharing that a career transition from dog grooming to skating coaching has been “absolutely life-changing.”

Owen described the unique atmosphere of the Liverpool skating community, saying, “The vibe, the energy, the music, and the people is everything. People often comment on how they see us in videos doing group activities. There’s a genuine connection among everyone.”

For those hesitant about learning to skate, Amy reassured newcomers: “We fall over every week. If you’re not falling, you’re not learning. We teach everything from how to fall safely to building confidence on the skates. It’s all about pushing yourself and knowing that everyone is there to support you when you get back up.”
