Colombian Drug Smuggler Jailed for £42 Million Cocaine Plot

The final member of a significant drug smuggling operation has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in an attempt to import cocaine valued at approximately £42 million into the United Kingdom. On October 30, 2023, 40-year-old Colombian national Didier Tordecilla Reyes received a prison term of 13 and a half years at Hull Crown Court after pleading guilty to conspiracy to import cocaine.

Reyes was apprehended by officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) in May 2022, during a coordinated operation at a hotel in Lelley, East Yorkshire. Alongside him were two accomplices: Mark Moran, aged 24, and Daniel Livingstone, aged 25, both from Argyll and Bute. The NCA discovered 524 kilos of cocaine hidden in a hire van parked outside the hotel, marking a significant seizure in the fight against drug trafficking.

Details of the Operation

Investigations revealed that Reyes acted as a liaison with Colombian drug cartels, having flown into the UK specifically for this smuggling attempt. He and Moran had launched a rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) from the Hessle slipway before returning to shore hours later with the substantial drug haul. They unloaded the drugs at a beach near the Easington caravan park, where Livingstone was waiting and signaling them with a torch.

NCA officers monitored the operation closely, observing the unloading process and the van leaving the scene. Notably, when Reyes was arrested, his clothing was so soaked that he needed to change into a forensic white suit for transport. This arrest was part of a broader investigation that tracked the group’s activities, including their purchase of a VW Touareg with a tow bar in Dewsbury and the acquisition of the RHIB used in the operation.

Consequences and Sentencing

The NCA’s efforts, in collaboration with Humberside Police and Border Force, ultimately thwarted the operation and disrupted the financial gains of the associated organized crime groups. Senior Investigating Officer Alan French emphasized the importance of this collaborative effort, stating, “Reyes was an integral part of this smuggling attempt, acting as a go-between with drug cartel bosses in Colombia. Without his input, the cocaine would never have got into Moran and Livingstone’s hands.”

Both Livingstone and Moran faced sentencing in December 2022. Livingstone received a sentence of seven years and nine months, while Moran was sentenced to 15 years for his role in the conspiracy. A fourth individual, also from Argyll and Bute, was acquitted during the trial.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges posed by drug trafficking and the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat the distribution of class A drugs in communities across the UK.
