Anthony Boyle Reveals Childhood Struggles and Acting Journey

Anthony Boyle, known for his roles in popular historical dramas such as Derry Girls and Masters of the Air, has shared the challenges he faced during his childhood, which included a rare medical condition. In an interview with Backstage in 2024, Boyle revealed that he suffered from Perthes disease, a condition that disrupts blood flow to the hip bone, preventing it from growing properly. This ailment severely limited his mobility, causing him to be unable to walk for several years.

Reflecting on his experience, Boyle noted, “It meant I couldn’t walk for a number of years, and I couldn’t play sports like the rest of my family.” This period of isolation led him to observe the world around him closely. He described how watching the physicality and behaviors of others ignited a passion for performance within him. “I spent so much time not being able to be involved that when I could walk again and join in, I became the first to volunteer for anything. Since then, I’ve never been a wallflower,” the 31-year-old actor explained.

Overcoming Challenges and Finding His Path

Boyle’s struggles were not limited to his health. He also faced difficulties in his early education, which culminated in his expulsion from school at the age of 16. Afterward, he was transferred to an all-girls school in Belfast. In his interview, he admitted to having “behavioural problems” that may have stemmed from undiagnosed dyslexia. “I’ve never really liked authority, so I didn’t respond to that in a positive way,” he added.

Despite these challenges, this new school environment introduced him to drama, which became a pivotal moment in his life. Boyle subsequently honed his craft at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, leading to professional opportunities in theatre and film. Notably, he was cast as the original Scorpius Malfoy in the West End and Broadway productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Rising Star in Historical Dramas

Boyle made his film debut in 2019’s Tolkien, portraying Geoffrey Bache Smith. His television career began earlier, with a role as a Bolton Guard in the acclaimed series Game of Thrones. His affinity for historical roles has remained evident throughout his career, as he has portrayed significant historical figures, including John Wilkes Booth in Manhunt and IRA activist Brendan Hughes in the upcoming series Say Nothing. He also plays John “Jack” Barak in Shardlake, set during the reign of Henry VIII.
