Australian Open 2024 Offers Record Prize Money for Players
This year’s Australian Open features a record prize pool of £55.5 million, marking a significant increase from previous years. The champions of the men’s and women’s singles will each take home £2.1 million (approximately AUD $4.15 million), which reflects a 19 percent rise compared to last year’s winners, Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys, who received £1.76 million each.
Despite this increase, some of the top players have expressed disappointment. They argue that the distribution of prize money does not adequately reflect the revenues generated by the tournament. A group of leading players has formally addressed the grand slam events, advocating for a more equitable ratio of revenue to prize money, suggesting it should align with the 22 percent ratio found at combined events on the ATP and WTA Tours.
Increased Support for All Competitors
Craig Tiley, CEO of Tennis Australia, emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting players at every level. “This 16 percent increase demonstrates our commitment to supporting tennis careers at every level,” Tiley stated. He highlighted that the prize money for qualifiers has been boosted by 55 percent since 2023, along with enhancements to player benefits, aiming to ensure the sustainability of professional tennis for all competitors.
The detailed breakdown of the prize money for the men’s and women’s singles is as follows:
– Winner: £2.1 million (AUD $4.15 million)
– Runner-up: £1.1 million (AUD $2.15 million)
– Semi-finals: £622,000 (AUD $1.25 million)
– Quarter-finals: £373,000 (AUD $750,000)
– Fourth round: £239,000 (AUD $480,000)
– Third round: £163,000 (AUD $327,750)
– Second round: £112,000 (AUD $225,000)
– First round: £75,000 (AUD $150,000)
Comparative Prize Money Across Grand Slams
Looking ahead, the prize money for the 2025 US Open is set at £3.7 million, while Wimbledon will offer £3 million and Roland Garros will provide £2.13 million for its champions. The Australian Open’s prize money for 2026 is expected to remain at £2.1 million.
The tournament will be broadcast live on TNT Sports in the UK and online via Discovery+. In the United States, viewers can catch the action live on ESPN and the Tennis Channel.
This significant prize pool aims to not only reward excellence in tennis but also to address the calls for better financial distribution within the sport. With the grand slam event set to begin, players will undoubtedly be motivated by the prospect of competing for the largest prize money in the tournament’s history.
