Major Demolition Planned at Coventry Airport for New Battery Factory
Buildings at Coventry Airport are set for demolition as part of a significant planning proposal for the site. The Warwick District Council planning committee is scheduled to review this application, which seeks approval for a battery manufacturing facility known as Greenpower Park. The application includes plans to remove existing structures, construct a main spine road, and establish necessary parking and access points. The airport is expected to close next year.
In March 2022, outline permission for the battery gigafactory was granted, and this latest application marks a crucial step in advancing the development. The site, located in Baginton, near Coventry, has ignited debate among local communities. Both the Baginton and Bubbenhall Parish Councils have voiced objections, citing safety concerns. They argue that the facility is situated in a densely populated area adjacent to a heavily trafficked national road network, posing risks during potential incidents at the gigafactory.
While Coventry City Council has not formally opposed the application, it has highlighted discrepancies in the noise report associated with the facility. Local Ward Councillor Josh Payne expressed a tentative inclination to support the application, balancing the concerns of residents with potential economic benefits. In contrast, Councillor Pam Radford raised objections focused on noise, traffic, and safety, advocating for further investigation before granting approval.
Public feedback has also been significant, with a total of 24 objections submitted. Despite the concerns raised, a report prepared for the planning committee recommends approval, asserting that the proposed works are aligned with the parameters established during the outline stage. It confirms that the details related to earthworks, drainage, substation, and the main road are acceptable.
Community Reactions and Future Considerations
Local commenters have shared a range of opinions regarding the demolition and development plans. One resident, Bobinder, expressed hope for the successful approval of the project, envisioning additional community facilities such as a centre for aspiring engineers and a new health clinic. Others, like Ronnie Rees, questioned why the original terminal could not have been repurposed for this new development, arguing that it would have mitigated local opposition.
Critics of the project, such as user Curly1987, suggest that the gigafactory concept may be a strategy by developers to gain planning permission for other types of facilities, potentially warehouses rather than a true gigafactory. This sentiment echoes across various comments, with some residents expressing disappointment at losing the airport, a historical asset that they believe other cities would value.
In light of the impending decision by the planning committee, community members are weighing the potential economic advantages against their safety and environmental concerns. The committee’s determination will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Coventry Airport and the surrounding area. A decision is expected to be announced later this week.
