American Schools Ban Over 10,000 Books Amid Censorship Surge

The 2023–24 school year has witnessed a significant rise in censorship, with over 10,000 books banned in American public schools. This trend has intensified since the pandemic, primarily targeting narratives that explore Black and LGBTQ+ perspectives. Advocates for these bans often frame them as protective measures for children, claiming that certain themes are too mature. Yet, in a digital age where information is readily accessible, the persistent fear surrounding books raises important questions about their impact.
This ongoing issue serves as the backdrop for the “Banned Books on Screen” series, collaboratively presented by the Great Barrington Public Libraries. This Sunday at 4 p.m., the series will feature a screening of “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Stephen Chbosky. The film tells the story of a group of teenagers in Pittsburgh grappling with themes of love, trauma, and identity. Both the book and the film have resonated with audiences, particularly millennials and Gen Z, yet they have faced bans and challenges for over two decades due to their candid exploration of complex topics, including substance use and sexual orientation.
Ironically, the very act of banning these books underscores their lasting power. Unlike television and film, which can blend into the background of everyday life, books require focused attention and foster a deeper connection between the reader and the author’s voice. Books remain portable, affordable, and easy to share, making them influential yet difficult to regulate. This inherent power is why stories from banned books continue to matter, both on the page and on screen.
The series celebrating banned literature continues with a lineup of films that have also faced scrutiny. Upcoming screenings include classics and modern tales that challenge societal norms, reinforcing the notion that storytelling remains a vital means of understanding diverse experiences.
In addition to the film series, The Triplex is hosting a range of events to engage audiences around the themes of storytelling and cultural expression. For instance, the screening of “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” will take place on September 12, offering a nostalgic return to the beloved series as the Crawley family faces new challenges.
Another notable event is the screening of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” on September 16, which promises to entertain audiences with its humorous take on time travel. This cult classic highlights the importance of creativity and imagination, themes that echo the ongoing dialogue around the value of literature and freedom of expression.
The Triplex International Youth Film Festival is scheduled for September 19 through 21, showcasing the next generation of filmmakers. This festival will include discussions with notable figures from the industry, emphasizing the importance of nurturing new voices in cinema.
As the conversation surrounding banned books continues, events like “Banned Books on Screen” and the various offerings at The Triplex serve to remind audiences of the power of storytelling. They encourage a collective reflection on the narratives that shape our understanding of the world, emphasizing that literature, in all its forms, remains a crucial avenue for exploring complex issues and diverse perspectives.
