Chaos and Music: The Untold Tales of Weeley and Bickershaw Festivals
The Weeley and Bickershaw festivals, held in the early 1970s, stand as chaotic reminders of a bygone era in British music culture. While festivals like Woodstock and Altamont dominate the narrative of the period, Weeley and Bickershaw are often overlooked, notable for their extreme weather conditions, violent confrontations, and the sheer unpredictability of their organization.
The Bickershaw Festival, which took place in May 1972 near Wigan, was marked by relentless rain, transforming the venue into a muddy battleground. Attendees, including writer and musician Mick Farren, recounted experiences of wading through calf-deep mire while listening to acts like the Grateful Dead and Captain Beefheart. Farren vividly described the atmosphere, stating, “Mud-covered figures waded and stumbled in a viscous, calf-deep mire,” capturing the surreal nature of the event.
In sharp contrast, the Weeley Festival, held in August 1971 near Clacton, was characterized by scorching heat and dry conditions. This festival quickly descended into chaos as grass fires erupted and violent clashes occurred between festival security and outlaw motorcycle clubs. Despite a promising lineup that included T.Rex, Rory Gallagher, and Mott The Hoople, the festival’s organization fell short of expectations.
Both festivals were ambitious undertakings. The promoters of Bickershaw, a group of local businessmen led by television presenter Jeremy Beadle, underestimated the practical challenges of hosting a large open-air event. Conversely, the Weeley Festival was organized by the local Round Table, an organization with limited experience in handling large-scale events. The lack of planning was evident in both instances, as crucial details like weather preparedness and site suitability were overlooked.
The consequences were immediate and severe. At the Bickershaw Festival, the rain persisted for days until the Grateful Dead took the stage, leading to reports that the sun finally broke through just as they began to play. Conversely, Weeley’s dry heat led to dangerous conditions, with reports of parked cars exploding due to the heat and fireworks set off by festival-goers.
Both festivals attracted a mix of fans and troublemakers, leading to chaotic scenes. At Weeley, a report from the underground paper Frendz detailed how a vigilante group formed to combat the Hells Angels, resulting in violent confrontations that left several injured. Meanwhile, at Bickershaw, Farren described how he had to navigate a chaotic environment filled with mud and mayhem, while still enjoying performances from iconic bands.
Despite the turmoil, moments of musicality shone through. The Grateful Dead’s performance at Bickershaw included their first-ever four-hour set in the UK, capturing the audience despite the adverse conditions. In the background of all the chaos, attendees focused on the music, with acts like King Crimson and the Pink Fairies delivering memorable performances.
The aftermath of these festivals revealed a shift in the music festival landscape. The overwhelming losses incurred by the promoters indicated that such anarchic gatherings were becoming unsustainable. Investors were reluctant to back future events characterized by such disorder, leading to a more structured approach to festival organization in subsequent years.
While the Weeley and Bickershaw festivals may not have the same recognition as their more famous counterparts, their stories remain significant in the annals of music history. They serve as a testament to the spirit of rock and roll, revealing how much attendees were willing to endure for the sake of live music. The tales of chaos, camaraderie, and unforgettable performances continue to resonate, reminding us of a time when the music was all that mattered, even amidst the mud and mayhem.
