TV presenter Davina McCall has spoken candidly about her experience following a brain tumour diagnosis during a health check-up. The 57-year-old’s revelation came as part of her advocacy for menopause awareness in November 2023. Although she was informed that the tumour was benign, McCall felt an overwhelming sense of urgency about her mortality, prompting her to create an end-of-life checklist.

In a heartfelt discussion at Fearne Cotton‘s Happy Place Festival, Davina described how the diagnosis left her grappling with the reality of her situation. After months of denial, her perspective shifted dramatically following a stark warning from her fourth neurosurgeon. He stressed the need for immediate action, stating, “It’s a big tumour. It can’t grow anymore, or you’ll get water on the brain. If you’re on a plane, there would have to be an emergency landing.”

Feeling the weight of her responsibilities, McCall acknowledged that her primary concern was the well-being of her children: Holly, 23, Tilly, 21, and 18-year-old Chester, from her previous marriage to Matthew Robertson. She reflected on her worries, stating, “You are only happy as your unhappiest child.” Despite her fears, she ultimately found solace in the knowledge that her children would be okay.

The process of creating her checklist proved transformative. McCall articulated that it allowed her to reach a state of mental clarity before undergoing surgery. She noted, “I felt I could go to sleep on the operating table and know that they were all here to help me, but I can let go of the outcome, and it was the best gift.”

In her journey through the challenges presented by her health issues, McCall has come to regard her surgery as a pivotal moment in her life. “I am not afraid of dying anymore. It was the biggest journey of my life. It was an amazing time,” she said.

She emphasized that her experience has imparted valuable lessons. “I have been on a massive life journey, and I have been through terrible struggles. That is where the learning comes from. If something really hard happens now, I know it is a good thing.”

As McCall continues to navigate her health journey, her insights serve as a reminder of the importance of mental preparation and the love of family during life’s most challenging moments.
