French Derby Shoes Set to Dominate Fashion Trends This Fall
Fashion is poised for a significant shift this September as the iconic French shoe brand Repetto reintroduces the Derby shoe, a style that is quickly gaining traction among trendsetters. The resurgence of this classic silhouette comes as ballet flats, long a staple in women’s wardrobes, face increasing competition from more versatile and practical footwear options.
The ballet flat has enjoyed a prominent position in fashion circles, often gracing runways from renowned designers such as Ferragamo and JW Anderson to Simone Rocha. Over the past decade, this style has become synonymous with the modern It-girl aesthetic, embraced by fashion icons like Alexa Chung and Kate Moss. Despite a temporary decline in popularity, where chunkier styles like the Fila Disruptor took center stage, ballet flats have made a remarkable comeback, evolving into various forms including ballet sneakers and loafers.
However, the latest trend suggests a new direction. The Derby shoe, particularly the slim and supple variants, is set to take the spotlight. This shift is partly fueled by collaborations with notable designers. Notably, Jacquemus has recently partnered with Repetto for a spring/summer 2024 collection, signaling a revival of the Derby style in high fashion. Similarly, Lemaire has incorporated this lace-up design into its lineup, further establishing its presence in contemporary wardrobes.
The appeal of the Derby shoe lies in its practicality and stylistic versatility. Unlike ballet flats, which often lack structural support, Derbies offer a more robust design suitable for everyday wear. They provide a blend of comfort and style, making them an ideal choice for those seeking a fashionable yet functional option. This adaptability positions the Derby as a fitting choice for various fashion aesthetics, whether one channels the brooding charisma of Serge Gainsbourg or the classic elegance of Audrey Hepburn in “Funny Face.”
Repetto’s historical connection to the arts adds a layer of cultural significance to the revival of the Derby shoe. The brand’s Zizi style, originally named after dancer Zizi Jeanmaire, has roots in the world of performance and dance. As such, the Derby shoe represents not only a fashion statement but also a nod to the brand’s rich heritage.
With its recent appearances at major fashion houses such as Celine, where designer Michael Rider offers a French interpretation of American prep, the Derby is set to become a key player in upcoming seasonal trends. As fashion enthusiasts prepare for the fall, this transition away from ballet flats towards more substantial footwear reflects an evolving landscape where comfort and style go hand in hand.
As the fashion world anticipates the arrival of September 2024, all eyes will be on Repetto and the resurgence of the Derby shoe—an elegant yet practical choice that promises to redefine modern footwear aesthetics.
