Jamie Jewitt Opens Up About Fatherhood Challenges and Love

Jamie Jewitt, a star from the reality show *Love Island*, has candidly shared his initial feelings of disconnection from his children at birth. Jewitt, 34, who rose to fame on the ITV2 dating show in 2017 alongside Camilla Thurlow, has three children with his wife: Nell, four; Nora, two; and Brodie, nine months.
In a recent post on his Substack, Jewitt reflected on the moment he first became a father, describing it as a complex experience that differed sharply from the idealized view often portrayed in media. He wrote, “The Hollywood moment… you’re supposedly overcome with a tidal wave of love the instant your baby enters the world. Except… what if you’re not?”
Jewitt specifically recalled the birth of his first daughter, Nell, in March 2020. He vividly described the atmosphere of the delivery room, stating, “You’re standing in a room that smells like bleach and adrenaline, watching the love of your life go through something you can barely comprehend.” He noted that his initial reaction upon holding Nell was one of surprise, questioning the expectation that fathers should feel an immediate bond.
Recognizing the disparity in emotional experiences between mothers and fathers, Jewitt emphasized the significant hormonal and psychological transformations mothers undergo during pregnancy. He stated, “A mother has carried the baby for nine months… prepared her emotionally and physically for motherhood.” In contrast, he pointed out that many fathers are still adjusting to the reality of impending parenthood when their child arrives.
Jewitt’s reflections challenge the notion that new fathers should instantly feel an overwhelming love for their newborns. He expressed that he felt nothing at first and suggested that this is a common yet unspoken sentiment among many fathers. “They whisper it. They say it like it’s a confession. Like they’re broken, or deficient, or cold,” he wrote.
As he navigated the early days of parenthood, Jewitt discovered that the bond with his children grew through daily interactions. He explained, “That’s the secret no one tells you: love predominantly grows in the doing.” He detailed intimate moments such as late-night bottle feeds and the joy of witnessing his child’s first smile as critical to developing that connection.
Jewitt went on to describe how this bond gradually formed over time. “It didn’t happen the day my child was born. It happened after weeks of showing up through the self-doubt and battles with that internal monologue,” he noted. He acknowledged that, ultimately, he became a pivotal figure in his daughter’s life, saying, “I had slowly and assuredly snuck into the spotlight and became a leading character in my little girl’s world.”
His reflections are not just personal but aim to offer reassurance to other first-time fathers who may feel similarly. “If you’re a new dad and you’re not feeling it yet, relax. There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re not broken. You’re not cold. You’re just not done,” he emphasized. Jewitt encouraged fathers to give themselves time and to remain present, stating, “When that connection does hit, it won’t be because the world told you to feel it. It’ll be because you built it.”
Through his openness, Jamie Jewitt hopes to ease the pressures many new fathers face, illuminating the reality of fatherhood and the gradual journey toward love and connection with their children.
