Jello Biafra Joins King Gizzard for Electric Cover of Police Truck
Jello Biafra teamed up with King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard for an energetic rendition of the classic punk song Police Truck during their performance at the Field Of Vision festival in Buena Vista, Colorado, on August 15, 2023. This unique collaboration brought together the former frontman of the Dead Kennedys and the acclaimed Australian psychedelic rock band, creating an unforgettable moment for fans.
As the festival unfolded, King Gizzard introduced Biafra as a “hero” and a significant source of inspiration for many artists. In a heartfelt exchange, Biafra expressed his admiration, declaring King Gizzard to be his favorite band. The performance showcases the ongoing influence of punk rock and highlights the enduring legacy of both Biafra and the Dead Kennedys.
Historic Collaboration and Cultural Impact
The song Police Truck was originally released as the b-side to the iconic track Holiday In Cambodia in 1980. Over the years, it has become a beloved anthem, particularly among gamers, thanks to its inclusion in the soundtrack of the popular 1999 video game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. The energetic cover at the festival reintroduced the song to a new generation, emphasizing its continued relevance in modern music.
In a notable shift, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard recently made headlines by removing their music from Spotify in protest against the platform’s CEO, Daniel Ek. The band criticized Ek for his investments in military technology, stating, “A PSA to those unaware: Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invests millions in AI military drone technology. We just removed our music from the platform. Can we put pressure on these Dr. Evil tech bros to do better? Join us on another platform.” This bold move highlights the band’s commitment to their principles and social issues.
Reflections on the Past
Biafra has not performed with the Dead Kennedys since their split in 1986. The band is currently fronted by Skip Greer. Earlier this year, guitarist East Bay Ray stated that Biafra’s reluctance to reunite is the primary obstacle to a revival of the original lineup. Ray remarked, “It’s Biafra that turns down any offers for us to do something; we don’t have any problem. He got caught with his hands in the till and wants to blame us for getting caught, but he should never have put his hands in there in the first place.”
The collaboration between Biafra and King Gizzard at the Field Of Vision festival not only celebrates punk rock’s rich history but also underscores the power of music to bridge generational gaps. As fans reflect on the enduring legacy of both artists, it is clear that their shared love for music continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the world.
