Kim Jong Un Names Daughter Kim Ju Ae as Potential Heir
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly chosen his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as his potential heir. This announcement, made by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), indicates a significant step in extending the Kim family’s dynasty into a fourth generation, despite the nation’s traditionally male-dominated leadership culture.
The NIS informed South Korean lawmakers that Kim Ju Ae has transitioned from mere training to being recognized as a designated successor. Lawmaker Lee Seong-kwen stated that this assessment was based on her increasing visibility at official functions. She has been observed expressing opinions on state policies and attending important military commemorations. Notably, the portrayal of Kim Ju Ae in North Korean state media has evolved. She is now referred to with honorific titles such as “great person of guidance,” a designation typically reserved for top leaders and their successors.
At approximately 13 years old, Kim Ju Ae is the only publicly known child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. Although intelligence officials believe that Kim Jong Un may have an older son, this individual has never been acknowledged in public or by state media. The world first became aware of Kim Ju Ae’s existence when American basketball player Dennis Rodman visited North Korea in 2013, revealing that he had “held baby Ju Ae.” Based on this timeline, analysts estimate that she was born around 2013.
Her emergence as a prominent figure raises essential questions about the acceptance of a female leader in a country ruled by men since its inception in 1948. If Kim Ju Ae were to ascend following her father, she would become the first female leader in North Korea’s history. Some analysts have expressed concerns that the military-centric regime might not embrace a woman in such a role. Nevertheless, the “Paektu bloodline”—the direct lineage of the Kim family—appears to outweigh considerations of gender. Observers suggest that Kim Jong Un is strategically introducing her to the public and military elite early on to foster acceptance of her potential leadership.
Kim Ju Ae made her first public appearance in November 2022, where she was photographed holding her father’s hand while inspecting a significant intercontinental ballistic missile. Since then, she has participated in various events, including military parades and factory openings. Her recent trip to Beijing in September marked her first known travel abroad, designed to introduce her to North Korea’s most crucial ally.
As the regime prepares for the upcoming Workers’ Party congress, a major political event occurring every five years, the NIS is monitoring whether Kim Ju Ae will take a prominent role. Her central participation would further solidify her status as a potential leader, indicating the regime’s commitment to her future rule.
Kim Jong Un himself was named heir in 2010 at the age of 26, shortly before the death of his father, Kim Jong Il. Analysts speculate that he aims to provide his daughter with a longer period to acclimate to her future responsibilities. By initiating her public life at a young age, he hopes to secure the dynasty’s future as his own health and power may diminish. The dynamics of leadership within North Korea remain complex, but Kim Ju Ae’s rise could redefine the country’s historical narrative.
