Liam Gallagher has paid tribute to former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton, who passed away recently, marking 17 years since Gallagher and his brother, Noel, famously carried Hatton’s title belts into the ring. The heartfelt message came as Gallagher reflected on their shared history in the boxing world, particularly during Hatton’s iconic career.
The tribute was made through a post on the social media platform X, where Gallagher expressed his sorrow over Hatton’s death, stating, “Absolutely devastated to hear the news about RICKY HATTON. It was an absolute honour to know him and carry his belts. RIP CHAMP LIVE FOREVER LG x.”
Authorities reported that police discovered Hatton’s body at his residence in Hyde, Greater Manchester, at approximately 07:00 on Sunday. The local police have indicated that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. Hatton was 45 years old and had been preparing for a comeback fight against Eisa Al Dah, scheduled for December 2, 2023, in Dubai.
Remembering a Boxing Icon
Ricky Hatton was celebrated as one of the greatest boxers in British history, winning world titles in both the light-welterweight and welterweight divisions. His career spanned 15 years, during which he faced illustrious opponents, including Kostya Tszyu and Jose Luis Castillo. Despite facing setbacks, including knockout losses to notable fighters such as Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009, he remained a beloved figure in the sport.
In recognition of his contributions to boxing, Hatton was awarded an MBE in 2007. Following his retirement, he transitioned into roles as a boxing promoter and trainer, remaining actively engaged in the sport he loved.
The news of his passing has resonated deeply within the boxing community and among fans, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of Hatton’s remarkable career. Gallagher’s tribute reflects the profound impact Hatton had not just as an athlete, but as a person who inspired many in and out of the ring.
As the boxing world mourns the loss of Ricky Hatton, his legacy continues to live on through the countless lives he touched and the unforgettable moments he created within the sport.
