Local Arts and Culture Thrive with New Exhibitions and Events

Various cultural events and educational programs are underway in the Berkshires, offering residents and visitors alike an array of artistic and enriching opportunities. Key highlights include an exhibition at Chesterwood, a musical at the Mac-Haydn Theatre, a new book club at Lenox Library, and several courses at the Taconic Learning Center.
Ann Jon Retrospective at Chesterwood
Chesterwood is currently hosting the “Ann Jon Retrospective,” showcasing the works of Berkshires-based sculptor Ann Jon. Running through October 31, 2023, this exhibition features thirty-one pieces that reflect her artistic journey. Jon, originally from Denmark, immigrated to the United States at the age of eighteen and discovered her passion for sculpting with clay and wood.
Her education includes stone carving under the guidance of Jose de Creeft at The Art Students League in New York and classical sculpture techniques at the Accademia di Belle Arte de Carrara in Italy. Jon’s works draw inspiration from various cultures and mythologies, evident in her statement: “As I researched many cultures, I became aware of a subconscious thread that seems to connect them all.” The exhibition is located at 4 Williamsville Road in Stockbridge, with further details available online.
Musical Escape at Mac-Haydn Theatre
The Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham, New York, is presenting the lively musical “Escape to Margaritaville” until August 31, 2023. This show features the beloved songs of Jimmy Buffett and combines elements of romance and comedy, promising a tropical escape for audiences of all ages.
With hits like “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Margaritaville,” the production invites attendees to enjoy frozen margaritas during performances, enhancing the island atmosphere. The theatre is situated at 1925 NY-203 in Chatham, and tickets can be purchased online.
New Book Club at Lenox Library
In a bid to engage adult readers, the Lenox Library is launching a monthly Young Adult (YA) book club, starting on September 30, 2023. This initiative aims to foster discussions around both new and classic young adult literature, with the first meeting dedicated to “Looking For Smoke” by K. A. Cobell.
The novel explores themes of friendship and mystery within the context of the Blackfeet Reservation, making it a compelling choice for the inaugural discussion. The book club will meet every last Tuesday of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the library, located at 18 Main Street in Lenox.
Taconic Learning Center Expands Course Offerings
Starting on September 15, 2023, the Taconic Learning Center will introduce nine new courses for its Fall semester. These non-credit, tuition-free classes aim to promote lifelong learning within the tri-state area, covering diverse subjects such as literature, art, history, and health.

Berkshire Community College Reintroduces BCC Chorale
