Meghan Markle’s ‘Salmonella Sussex’ Nickname Sparks Cookbook Controversy
Meghan Markle faces significant backlash after a recent Instagram video of her preparing Thanksgiving dinner sparked criticism and a viral nickname, “Salmonella Sussex.” The footage, which depicted the Duchess of Sussex seasoning raw turkey while wearing jewellery, triggered a wave of negative comments regarding food safety practices.
The backlash intensified as social media users pointed out the potential health risks associated with her cooking methods. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), raw turkey can carry harmful bacteria, including Salmonella, which can contaminate anything it touches. Critics accused Markle of poor kitchen habits, with one user stating, “She is not a trained chef. Based on what she has publicly shown, her kitchen habits are anything but safe or professional.”
The timing of this controversy could not be more unfortunate, as Markle is reportedly preparing for the release of a cookbook in 2026. This project is tied to her Netflix cooking series, With Love, Meghan, and aims to showcase a range of recipes, including “single skillet spaghetti” and “rainbow-themed fruit salad,” along with hosting tips and lifestyle advice.
Social media users quickly adopted the “Salmonella Sussex” moniker, turning it into a symbol of Markle’s perceived kitchen incompetence. One particularly biting comment read, “Everything for a bit of attention. What a terrible woman.” The derision continued with jokes about her cooking skills, with one user quipping, “Can’t wait to see it on the shelves at the Dollar Tree! Perfect gag gift!”
The backlash has drawn attention to Markle’s culinary credibility just as she seeks to establish herself in the lifestyle sector. Former royal butler Grant Harrold shared insights on Markle’s publishing plans, suggesting that while she may release a cookbook, it will likely not be the memoir some fans hope for. Harrold noted, “I believe Meghan will write a book in 2026. However, I don’t think it will be the memoir many of her fans are hoping for.”
He predicted that the cookbook would align with her lifestyle branding, potentially offering tips and tricks from her Netflix series. Harrold added that the royal family might appreciate this direction, stating, “I think the royal family hopes she continues her work in the lifestyle sphere. It’s what she’s passionate about, and she’s made a real mark.”
As Markle navigates this challenging situation, her reputation as a culinary authority hangs in the balance. The “Salmonella Sussex” nickname, while harsh, has resonated with the public, raising doubts about her ability to present herself as a trusted figure in the kitchen. For her upcoming cookbook to succeed, Markle will need to demonstrate significant improvement in her food preparation practices and effectively reassure sceptical audiences that her recipes deserve a place in their homes.
