Michael Stone Remains in Prison as “Chillenden Murders” Airs on Netflix
The Netflix documentary “The Chillenden Murders” has reignited interest in the tragic case of Lin Russell and her daughters, Josie and Megan. The documentary explores the brutal events of July 1996, when 45-year-old Lin and her daughters, aged nine and six, were attacked while walking with their dog in Kent, England. The incident left Lin and Megan dead, while Josie miraculously survived.
In the aftermath of the murders, a Crimewatch Appeal led to numerous tips, ultimately resulting in the arrest of Michael Stone in 1997. Stone, now 63, was convicted of the murders and sentenced to three life terms with a minimum tariff of 25 years. He is currently incarcerated at HMP Full Sutton, located near York.
Despite Stone’s conviction, controversy continues to surround the case. In 2022, convicted serial killer Levi Bellfield claimed responsibility for the murders of Lin and Megan, although he later retracted this statement. Bellfield, who is serving two life sentences for other murders, has not provided any concrete evidence supporting his claim.
The documentary, which originally aired in 2023, details Stone’s ongoing fight to prove his innocence. It highlights that he lost a second appeal against his conviction in 2005 and that his legal team was denied permission for a judicial review in 2011 regarding the Criminal Cases Review Commission’s (CCRC) decision not to refer his case back to the Court of Appeal.
Ongoing Investigations and Appeals
Since 2017, Stone’s case has been actively investigated by the CCRC, which has yet to reach a decision on whether to send it back for appeal. In the documentary, it is noted that “Michael Stone still protests his innocence of these crimes and his legal team continues to work to overturn his conviction.”
The chilling nature of the original crimes and the controversies surrounding Stone’s conviction have kept public interest alive. Viewers of “The Chillenden Murders: Who Killed Lin and Megan?” are left questioning the complexities of the case and the implications of wrongful convictions in the justice system.
As of the release of the documentary, Stone remains behind bars, continuing to assert his innocence. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of violent crime on families and communities, as well as the potential for miscarriages of justice.
