Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation Greenlight ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel
Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have officially announced the production of a sequel to the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters. This follow-up comes on the heels of the original film’s massive global success, which has been hailed as Netflix’s most popular movie of all time. Original directors and writers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to lead the project, marking the beginning of a multi-year creative partnership with the streaming giant.
The sequel will expand on the vibrant universe established in the first film. Kang expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.” Appelhans echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the connection to the characters and their journey. “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”
Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, praised the original film’s impact, stating, “With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres.” She highlighted the renewed partnership with the filmmakers and Sony Pictures Animation, aiming to build the franchise in ways that will surprise and delight fans worldwide.
Dan Lin, Chairman of Netflix Film, acknowledged the bold creative choices made by Kang and Appelhans. He remarked that their storytelling broke cultural barriers and resonated deeply with audiences. “At Netflix, our goal is to make someone’s favorite movie and they did that by making the most popular Netflix movie of all time! There’s so much more story to tell, and we can’t wait to bring more HUNTR/X to fans everywhere,” Lin stated.
The collaborative effort between Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation is focused on nurturing unique creative visions. Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, Presidents of Sony Pictures Animation, reiterated their commitment to supporting the filmmakers’ distinctive perspectives. “Maggie and Chris brought their incredibly distinct perspectives to this film, telling a story audiences embraced around the globe. We are thrilled to work with them to expand their vision in the next chapter.”
As anticipation builds for the sequel, fans can expect an official trailer and release date to be announced soon. This partnership not only signifies a continuation of a beloved story but also reflects the ongoing trend of successful animated films gaining traction on global platforms. The evolution of KPop Demon Hunters promises new adventures and creative storytelling that will resonate with audiences around the world.
