Netflix has announced a significant pay-1 deal for its Oscar-nominated film, “The Secret Agent,” during the opening of its new and expanded offices in São Paulo on January 27, 2025. This announcement coincides with the company’s celebration of 15 years of operations in Brazil. Co-CEO Greg Peters highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting local productions by contributing to the film’s production costs, which features acclaimed actor Wagner Moura.

“The Secret Agent” is recognized in multiple categories for the upcoming Oscars, including Best Picture, International Feature Film, and Best Actor for Moura. Peters expressed enthusiasm for partnering with local filmmakers, stating, “We support Brazilian films in multiple ways because we want to be the best partners and stay flexible so local producers can decide the best way to bring their projects to life.”

Strategic Collaborations and Impact on Local Industry

In addition to “The Secret Agent,” Netflix has formed partnerships with various production companies to bolster its portfolio of Brazilian content. Collaborations include working with Filmes de Plástico on a new film by Gabriel Martins, who directed Brazil’s submission for the 2023 Oscars, and with Barry Company and Biónica Filmes on Daniel Rezende’s project, which was among the contenders for this year’s Oscars. Other partnerships involve Conspiração on Arthur Fontes’ upcoming comedy and Lighthouse on Marcelo Antunez’s 2023 romantic film.

Over the past three years, Netflix has collaborated with more than 40 Brazilian production companies. This effort has generated over 12,000 jobs through films and series that debuted in 2025. Notably, global viewership of Netflix’s Brazilian titles surged by 60% between July and December 2025, indicating a growing interest in local narratives.

Upcoming Projects and Office Expansion

Looking ahead, Netflix plans to expand its Brazilian offerings in 2026, which includes a series based on the country’s triumphant 1970 FIFA World Cup team and a spin-off feature related to existing series. One of the most anticipated projects is the film adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s 1987 novel.

The new São Paulo office is significant as it is the only Netflix location in Latin America fully occupied by the company. This expansion underscores Netflix’s commitment to investing in the Brazilian market and enhancing its presence in the region.

Through these initiatives, Netflix aims to further establish itself as a key player in Brazil’s entertainment landscape, fostering local talent and enriching its content library with diverse voices and stories.
