“Netflix’s ‘American Primeval’ Shatters Records with 234.3 Million Hours”
Netflix has achieved a significant milestone with its latest limited series, American Primeval, which has set new viewing records since its release on January 9, 2025. The series has amassed an impressive 234.3 million hours of viewing time and garnered 46.5 million views in the first half of the year, according to data from FlixPatrol. This makes it the most successful western series on the platform to date.
The series, created by Mark L. Smith, is set in Utah in the year 1857 and delves into the deadly conflicts involving the Mormon Church, Native Americans, pioneers, and the U.S. government. The narrative uses the Mountain Meadows Massacre as a pivotal event, blending historical facts with fictionalized elements. Notably, some characters are based on real individuals, including Brigham Young, portrayed by Kim Kouts, and pioneer Jim Bridger, played by Shea Whigham.
Unlike traditional westerns that predominantly feature male protagonists, American Primeval shifts the narrative focus to women. Over its six episodes, the series intertwines multiple storylines that collectively depict the harsh realities of war. One of the central narratives follows Sara Roswell, played by Betty Gilpin, who hires a guide, Isaac Reed, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch, in her search for her son’s father. Their journey unfolds across visually stunning and rugged landscapes, marked by explicit depictions of violence.
The series stands out for its emphasis on three female perspectives during a time when women faced significant societal oppression. Alongside Sara, the plot also follows Abish, the newlywed wife of Mormon Jacob Pratt, who is captured by a member of the Shoshone tribe after the massacre, and Two Moons, a member of the same tribe who is forced to flee after killing her rapist. Their intertwined fates form the emotional core of the series.
Critics have praised American Primeval for its innovative storytelling and character development. In a review for Collider, critic Megi Lovit described the series as a “masterclass in acting, directing, and writing,” reflecting the robust interest from viewers, evidenced by an 87 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite its record-breaking performance, the series has received relatively little media attention. Nevertheless, its success highlights a growing trend of content that not only entertains but also challenges traditional narratives, placing women at the forefront of historical storytelling. As Netflix continues to expand its offerings, American Primeval sets a new standard in the western genre, demonstrating the platform’s commitment to diverse and compelling narratives.
