Russell Grant Relocates After Health Crisis and Tumour Diagnosis
Russell Grant, known for his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, has relocated due to ongoing health challenges following a brain tumour diagnosis. The 74-year-old star, who competed in the ninth series of the popular BBC show, recently underwent surgery related to a pituitary brain tumour, prompting a move from his long-time home in Eryri (Snowdonia) to a new residence in Lancashire.
After his diagnosis in 2023, Grant faced the need for regular medical care at a specialist hospital in Manchester. This necessitated his move closer to the hospital, as he had been making an arduous eight-hour round trip multiple times a week for treatment. In a conversation with The Times, he remarked, “I recently bought a small two-bedroom 1930s house in Lancashire, just outside Manchester, after renting since my diagnosis.”
Initially treated at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, Grant’s care was transferred to Manchester, leading to significant logistical challenges. “As I live alone, I needed somewhere that was low maintenance,” he explained, underscoring the practical considerations that influenced his move.
Grant, who relocated to Wales in 1999, has been open about the impact of his tumour on his life. He shared that the condition has led to “limited contact” with others, prompting him to shift his career focus towards social media. While he continues to write horoscopes for various publications, including The Mirror, he has stepped back from performing in pantomimes and stage shows, despite receiving multiple offers.
The star’s health struggles have compounded following personal losses in recent years. He lost his father, Frank, in 2019 and his mother, Jo, in 2020. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he was unable to attend his mother’s funeral in person, which further isolated him during a challenging period. Grant’s diagnosis came shortly after these family losses, with doctors revealing that the tumour had been developing for a decade before it was discovered.
In his earlier career, Grant gained popularity in the 1980s, notably for his segment on BBC Breakfast Time. His subsequent appearances include shows like This Morning, Loose Women, and even competing on Celebrity MasterChef.
Despite facing serious health challenges, Grant remains hopeful about the future. He expressed a desire to reassess his living situation once he receives the all-clear from his medical team. “If you had asked me a few years back, I might have said somewhere in the Austrian mountains, but not now,” he reflected, indicating a shift in perspective brought on by his experiences.
As he continues his recovery, Grant’s journey serves as a reminder of the resilience required in the face of life-altering health challenges. His decision to relocate and adapt to new circumstances demonstrates his commitment to prioritizing his health and well-being during this difficult time.
