Netflix has introduced a captivating new romantic comedy titled Love and Wine, which is steadily gaining traction among viewers. The film, hailing from South Africa, features Masali Baduza, known for her role in the popular series Bridgerton, as the determined nursing trainee Amahle Philliso. The plot centers on Amahle, a working-class student who is less than impressed by the affluent elite in her city.

In a contrasting storyline, Ovee Sityebi, portrayed by Ntobeko Sishi, is the carefree son of a billionaire who prefers partying over pursuing a career. Facing pressure from his father to join the family business, Ovee is resolved to forge his own path, opting to switch lives with his friend Nathi Maseko, played by Thandolwethu Zondi. This identity swap leads them to internships at a prestigious wine estate owned by Ovee’s father, allowing Ovee to hide his privileged background while he develops a connection with Amahle.

While the premise may resonate with seasoned romantic comedy aficionados, Love and Wine uniquely explores South African class disparities, offering a fresh perspective alongside its charming romance. Despite being a Netflix production, the film has not yet reached widespread recognition, although those who have seen it are expressing their enthusiasm.

According to a review from TellTaleTV, “From the outstanding acting to the perfectly-timed humour to the compelling narrative, Love and Wine is a heart-warming, feel-good romcom. Even though the storyline in Love and Wine is not particularly original, the execution is still excellent.” This sentiment is echoed by viewers on social media platforms. One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, remarked, “Just watched Love and Wine on Netflix… and wow. It’s been such a long time since a romantic movie made me smile like this. The cast truly delivered, the chemistry, the scenery, the vibes… everything was perfect.”

Others shared similar sentiments, with comments ranging from “Love + Wine on Netflix is such a goooooodddd movie,” to “I don’t watch romantic movies… in fact, I hate romantic movies… But this movie… Love and Wine on Netflix, go watch it. It’s so mushy mushy.” Another viewer added, “Love and Wine on Netflix is so stinkin’ cute omg,” illustrating the film’s ability to resonate with audiences.

Fans of Bridgerton will recognize Baduza as she portrayed Michaela Stirling in the series’ third season. Her character made a memorable debut as a gender-swapped version of Michael Stirling, who becomes romantically involved with Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd. Although Baduza’s role has been relatively minor, hints of a burgeoning romance suggest her character’s significance may grow in future episodes.

Love and Wine is currently available for streaming on Netflix, inviting viewers to enjoy a delightful exploration of love and identity set against the backdrop of South Africa’s wine country. As audiences continue to discover this charming film, it promises to leave a lasting impression in the genre.
