Strictly Come Dancing Fans Voice Concerns Over George Clarke’s Scores
Fans of Strictly Come Dancing have expressed frustration over the perceived underscoring of contestant George Clarke following another week of low marks. The 25-year-old YouTube star, who initially showcased promise in the competition, found himself at the bottom of the leaderboard last week, earning only 27 points after his performance as Harry Styles during Icons Week.
On November 1, 2023, during Halloween Week, Clarke and his partner Alexis Warr received a score of just 29 for their Cha Cha routine set to “Apple” by Charlie XCX. Viewers took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice their dissatisfaction, arguing that the judges focused on every mistake made by Clarke, while overlooking errors by other contestants. One user highlighted the discrepancy, stating, “Then they haven’t mentioned Vicky [Pattison] and Kai [Widdrington]’s visible mistake one time? This show is angering me tonight.”
Concerns extended beyond judging to the choreography itself. Some viewers felt that the dance routines did not adequately showcase Clarke’s abilities, with one comment noting, “That dance was all about Alexis. Not so much about George.” Another spectator added, “He barely danced. His partner was doing most of the work!”
The judges provided feedback that underscored their concerns. Head judge Shirley Ballas urged Clarke to approach his performances with greater intensity, saying, “I need you to be more competitive. Believe you can win this.” Fellow judge Anton Du Beke echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for Clarke to demonstrate more drive, stating, “The only person that doesn’t believe in what you do is you… We want to see the next level.”
In response to the judges’ critiques, Clarke reflected on his performances, acknowledging that he faced challenges. “I think last week was a bit of a setback but I wanted to prove to myself that I am putting in the effort and I’m not plateauing. I’m improving – fingers crossed,” he remarked.
As the competition progresses, Clarke currently stands in seventh place on the Strictly leaderboard, ahead of contestants such as EastEnders actor Balvinder Sopal, model Ellie Goldstein, and Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. The outcome now hinges on the public vote, which will determine which couples face the dreaded dance-off in the results show on Sunday night.
