Victor Wooten Shares Secrets to Success in the Music Industry
Victor Wooten, a renowned figure in the world of bass guitar, emphasizes the importance of personal growth and passion in achieving success in the music industry. Known for his innovative techniques, Wooten gained prominence with the release of Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ debut album in 1989. His approach to music has transformed the perception of the bass guitar, placing him among the greats alongside legends like Jaco Pastorius.
Throughout his career, Wooten has released ten solo albums and ten studio albums with the Flecktones, along with numerous collaborations, including the notable SMV project alongside Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. His prolific output is indicative of a musician who continuously seeks to evolve and inspire. “I tell people, ‘Don’t worry about becoming famous,’” Wooten stated in an interview with Bass Player magazine in November 2017. “Develop something. Become someone that the rest of the world will benefit from knowing about, and in doing that, you’ll find an audience.”
Wooten’s distinctive slap technique, characterized by rapid double-thumbing and multi-finger pops, has captivated audiences and fellow musicians. He encourages aspiring musicians to focus on their craft rather than seeking fame. “There’s too many people out there wishing they had a gig. Don’t get the gig and then complain about it,” he stated. This perspective reflects his belief that finding joy in music is essential for genuine artistic expression.
As Wooten navigates the demands of a career in music, he recognizes the necessity of balancing public life with personal rejuvenation. “You always need to replenish your energy, especially when you’re living such a public life and giving yourself to other people,” he explained. For Wooten, this often means taking time for himself, such as going for walks in new cities, allowing him to recharge before engaging with fans.
When asked about areas he wishes to improve, Wooten candidly admitted his desire to better utilize the music theory he has learned over the years. “I’m still not good at that,” he confessed, while also acknowledging his struggles with soloing through changes on unfamiliar songs. Despite his immense talent, Wooten remains humble, continually striving for growth.
In discussing the roles of sideman and leader, Wooten credits his early experiences with Béla Fleck as foundational. He appreciates Fleck’s approach to leadership, emphasizing collaboration and creativity. “Béla is the leader of the Flecktones – always has been, always will be,” Wooten noted. “But he’s also consistently said he feels like a leader among equals.” This philosophy fosters an environment where each musician can contribute their unique voice.
Wooten’s commitment to listening and creating from emotion is central to his artistry. “I play from emotion, and while the emotion is usually there, sometimes the notes just aren’t,” he explained. He often prioritizes emotional resonance over technical perfection, illustrating his dedication to genuine expression in his music.
Despite a busy schedule that includes performances and family commitments, Wooten finds ways to practice and refine his skills. “The days of having hours to practice are gone for me,” he admitted. “I have to know how to practice in the spur of the moment wherever I am, whenever I can.” This adaptability reflects a deep commitment to his craft and an understanding of the demands of a modern musician’s life.
Victor Wooten’s journey through the music industry serves as an inspiration to many aspiring artists. His insights into personal development, the importance of collaboration, and the balance between public and private life resonate deeply within the ever-evolving landscape of music. As he continues to push the boundaries of bass playing, Wooten remains a pivotal figure in the industry, demonstrating that passion and dedication are keys to lasting success.
