Miniature Horses Transform Lives of Children and the Terminally Ill

The remarkable impact of miniature horses is reshaping lives across Scotland, helping children communicate and providing comfort to those nearing the end of life. Cherene Robertson, a former NHS medic, founded Lunar Eclipse in 2021, a non-profit organization dedicated to using equine therapy to support individuals facing various challenges, from anxiety to terminal illness.

Robertson leads a team of ten specially trained miniature horses that visit schools, universities, and care homes nationwide. Her mission focuses on redefining equine-facilitated learning and wellness, emphasizing the unique bond between humans and horses.

Healing Through Connection

One of the most touching stories involves a non-verbal child named Conor, who found his voice thanks to a British miniature horse named Bubbles. Initially struggling with limited speech, Conor developed a profound connection with the horse, which encouraged him to express himself. “He would come home and say ‘horses, horses,’” Robertson recounted, highlighting how this simple interaction led to significant improvements in Conor’s communication skills.

With each visit, Conor became more engaged, demonstrating progress in understanding language and forming structured conversations. His mother expressed disbelief at her son’s transformation, marking a pivotal moment in his development.

Another poignant example is the bond formed between a terminally ill man named Stuart and Apollo, a miniature horse with a unique ability to sense emotional needs. During one of his visits to a care home, Apollo provided Stuart with comfort during a challenging time. “Apollo went straight to him, and he put his muzzle right into the crook of Stuart’s neck,” Robertson explained. The horse’s presence visibly calmed Stuart, who had no family nearby.

A Lasting Legacy

Stuart’s connection with Apollo deepened as he requested the horse to be by his side in his final moments. Unfortunately, by the time Robertson arrived with Apollo, Stuart had already passed away. Nevertheless, care home staff allowed Apollo to say goodbye, underscoring the horse’s impact on Stuart’s final days.

Weeks later, Robertson received another request: to accompany Stuart’s coffin during his funeral procession. “It was an honor to walk him down to his final resting place with his best friend,” she said. Apollo demonstrated his emotional intelligence by touching the coffin with his muzzle, symbolizing the bond he had formed with Stuart.

The stories of Conor and Stuart exemplify the profound effects that miniature horses can have on individuals in various circumstances. Each horse in Robertson’s “hoof gang” undergoes specialized desensitization training, preparing them to remain calm in unpredictable environments. This preparation allows them to provide support effectively, whether in schools or care homes.

Robertson believes that the therapeutic benefits of horses extend beyond simple companionship. “There is something about a horse that no other animal has,” she stated. “They get you through that bad day, and they’re just incredible beings.”

Through her work with Lunar Eclipse, Robertson continues to harness the power of these tiny equines, helping children and the elderly find solace and connection in their most vulnerable moments.
