Surge in Cognitive Supplements Signals Shift in Men’s Mental Health
The dietary supplement industry is experiencing significant growth in products aimed at cognitive support, particularly as awareness of men’s mental health becomes more prominent. According to Nick Stene, senior global insight manager at Euromonitor International, nearly 25% of all global dietary supplements make claims related to cognitive, mental, memory, or sleep support. Stene shared these insights ahead of his presentation at the NutraIngredients Mind Health Modulation Webinar, scheduled for December 11, 2023.
Stene highlighted that ingredients like omega-3 and magnesium remain foundational in mind-focused supplements. However, there is a notable increase in products containing mushrooms, NAD+, and Resveratrol, indicating a diversification of the market.
Men’s Mental Health Gains Attention
While women’s health has been a significant focus in the supplement space, particularly with products aimed at menopause, Stene anticipates a shift towards men’s mental health by 2027. He noted a cultural shift towards more open discussions about mental health among men, suggesting that this evolving dialogue is creating a newfound recognition of their mental health needs.
“Men’s health will rise, not because there’s a new need but because there’s a newly recognized need,” Stene stated in an interview. He observed that societal norms have traditionally discouraged men from expressing vulnerability. This cultural change may lead to greater acceptance of discussing issues related to mental health, including a phase known as andropause.
Andropause refers to the gradual decline in testosterone levels in men, similar to hormonal changes experienced in women during menopause. Stene pointed out that decreasing testosterone can significantly affect various aspects of health, including fitness and mental well-being.
Upcoming Webinar on Cognitive Innovations
Stene will delve deeper into these trends during the NutraIngredients webinar, where he will explore new product development trends, ingredients of interest, and areas ripe for innovation. He will be joined by Suria Darley, head of product development at Holland & Barrett, and Rachael Hall, director of health and beauty at Love Mushrooms. Together, they will discuss the latest innovations in brain health supplements, including scientific support for a variety of bioactive ingredients.
This webinar represents an opportunity for industry stakeholders to gain insights into the burgeoning market for cognitive health products and to understand how men’s mental health is becoming a critical focus area. To register for access to the broadcast, interested individuals can visit the NutraIngredients website.
As the discussion surrounding mental health continues to evolve, the dietary supplement sector appears poised to adapt, offering solutions that reflect the changing needs and attitudes of consumers.
