Clare Balding Supports Old Library Campaign at Corn Exchange

Award-winning broadcaster Clare Balding visited Newbury today, March 5, 2024, to lend her support to the Corn Exchange Old Library Campaign. The initiative aims to refurbish and reopen one of the town’s historic buildings, transforming it into a vibrant arts hub. This afternoon, at 14:00, Balding addressed an audience at The Corn Exchange, where she shared insights from her career and discussed her debut novel for adults, Pastures New.

During the event, titled “An Audience with Clare Balding,” attendees had the opportunity to hear her reflections on her extensive broadcasting career and her personal connections to the area. Balding, recognized as one of Britain’s beloved broadcasters, has made significant contributions to sports journalism and major royal event coverage. She is also a best-selling author, with a diverse portfolio that includes children’s novels and celebrated autobiographies.

In her novel Pastures New, Balding introduces readers to Alex, a woman approaching her 40s who has mastered the art of avoiding responsibility. A sudden inheritance of a dilapidated sheep farm in Wales challenges her to confront her past and uncover the truth behind her unexpected legacy. The Hungerford Bookshop was present at the event, offering copies of the novel for sale to attendees.

Clare Balding’s connection to Newbury runs deep. Growing up in the countryside, she developed a love for animals and literature, influenced by authors like Jilly Cooper and Henry James. Her autobiography, My Animals and Other Family, won the National Book Award for Autobiography of the Year, showcasing her storytelling prowess.

Balding’s career has also included competing as an amateur flat jockey, where she earned the title of Champion Lady Rider in 1990. After completing her degree in English Literature at Cambridge University, she transitioned into journalism, eventually becoming a prominent figure in broadcasting.
