Criticism Grows Over Water Quality Issues in Podgorica
Concerns surrounding the quality of drinking water in Podgorica have intensified, with local officials voicing criticism of the management at Vodovod Podgorica, particularly targeting its director, Aleksandar Nišavić. Andrija Klikovac, head of the Club of Councillors for the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), has publicly condemned Nišavić’s handling of ongoing water contamination issues, specifically regarding the water sourced from Mareza.
In a recent statement, Klikovac outlined what he described as a series of inadequate explanations provided by Nišavić for the persistent turbidity of the water. He listed several reasons given by the director, including aging pipes, malfunctioning SCADA systems, and even natural events like earthquakes and heavy rainfall. “The water remains murky,” Klikovac emphasized, questioning the validity of these excuses and calling for accountability.
According to Klikovac, the ongoing issues have inadvertently benefited companies that import bottled water, as residents increasingly turn to alternatives due to concerns over tap water quality. He remarked, “These companies are particularly grateful and satisfied with Nišavić’s management.” This raises significant questions about the impact on public health and consumer trust in the municipal water supply.
The criticism culminated in a post on social media, where Klikovac expressed his frustration further, implying that the situation reflects poorly on the local government and its decision-making capabilities. He referred to Nišavić as a “real expert” from the Democratic Party, suggesting that his appointment was politically motivated rather than based on merit.
As the situation unfolds, it remains crucial for the local authorities to address these concerns transparently. The health and safety of Podgorica’s residents depend on the quality of their drinking water, and the public is demanding clear and effective solutions from Vodovod Podgorica.
The increasing scrutiny on Nišavić’s leadership raises broader implications for local governance and public service accountability. Without prompt and decisive action, the trust in municipal services could continue to deteriorate, pushing residents toward reliance on bottled water and potentially leading to long-term public health implications.
As this issue develops, the community awaits further statements from both Vodovod Podgorica and local government officials to clarify their plans for addressing the water quality problems that have emerged.
