Dog Owners Advised to Modify Exercise Routines During 34C Heatwave

As a significant heatwave is expected to impact the UK, reaching temperatures of up to 34C in August, pet owners are being cautioned against walking their dogs in the extreme heat. The country has already experienced three heatwaves this summer, and further warnings have emerged as weather forecasts indicate dangerously high temperatures.

Veterinary experts emphasize that walking dogs during such elevated temperatures can pose serious health risks. The Kennel Club has stated that temperatures exceeding 27C are considered too hot for dog exercise. Consequently, pet owners are encouraged to explore alternative ways to ensure their dogs remain active without risking their health.

Creative Indoor Activities for Dogs

Danny Nelis-Rouse, owner of the motivational toy company Tug-E-Nuff, has shared several strategies to keep dogs engaged during hot weather. One of his innovative suggestions involves allowing dogs to utilize their sense of smell within the home. This practice not only provides physical activity but also mental stimulation.

Nelis-Rouse explained, “According to experts, just 20 minutes of sniffing is as enriching for dogs as a one-hour walk.” He recommends hiding treats in scrunched-up pieces of paper or filling a box with noisy household materials along with treats. This activity can keep dogs entertained for extended periods while ensuring their safety.

For owners who must take their dogs outside, it is essential to be cautious. When temperatures fall between 20C and 23C, it is advisable to stick to shaded areas during walks. If temperatures reach 24C to 26C, walking should only occur if necessary, ideally for a brief period in the shade.

Recognizing the Risks for Different Breeds

Certain dog breeds are particularly susceptible to overheating. Breeds such as French Bulldogs and Pugs may struggle with heat even at lower temperatures. Additionally, overweight dogs, those over eight years old, and puppies under six months are also at increased risk. It is prudent to keep these dogs indoors when temperatures are in the mid- to late 20s.

Following these guidelines can help dog owners protect their pets from the dangers of heat exposure. By prioritizing indoor activities and remaining vigilant about the conditions outside, pet owners can ensure their dogs lead active, healthy lives even during extreme weather.
