Montenegro Faces Slovenia in Key Euro 2024 Handball Match
Montenegro’s handball team is gearing up for a crucial match against Slovenia on January 10, 2024, in Oslo as part of the EHF Euro 2024 tournament. This encounter is significant for both teams, as Montenegro aims to progress to the main round of the competition, having only reached this stage twice in its history—first in 2008 and then again in 2022.
In their last meeting during the 2022 championships, Montenegro claimed a narrow victory over Slovenia, winning 33-32. This win stands out as the only triumph against Slovenia in their last 12 encounters. Currently, Montenegro is focused on securing a victory to achieve their primary goal of advancing in the tournament, but they face a formidable opponent in Slovenia, which has recently secured three consecutive wins against them in official matches.
The Slovenian team, which reached the semifinals of the 2024 Olympic Games, comes into this match with a strong reputation, despite arriving in Norway without nine key players, including top scorer Aleks Vlah and goalkeeper Klemen Ferlin. Despite its weakened roster, Slovenia remains a team to watch, according to head coach Uroš Zorman, who emphasizes the importance of starting the tournament on a strong note.
Coaches’ Perspectives on the Upcoming Clash
Montenegro’s coach, Didier Dinart, is aware of the challenges ahead. “Players are ready; we must apply what we have practiced so far,” he stated. Dinart recognizes Slovenia’s experience and success in previous competitions, but he remains optimistic about his team’s potential. He noted that their preparations have been solid, despite the absence of key players like goalkeepers Nebojša Simić and Nikola Matović.
On the other hand, Zorman expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete, despite the injuries affecting their squad. “Every first match is crucial and can be risky; we expect a tough encounter,” he mentioned, highlighting Montenegro’s strength and energy at the start of tournaments.
Player Insights and Team Dynamics
Key player Branko Vujović believes that the match is not decisive for advancing but still critical for momentum. “We have two more matches after this, and with two wins, we can progress to the main round,” he explained. Vujović is aware of Slovenia’s strengths but insists that Montenegro can harness their capabilities to secure a victory.
The teams have faced each other recently, with Slovenia winning their last three official matches against Montenegro. In preparation for the Euro, Slovenia played three friendly matches, securing wins against Kuwait (36-23) and Austria (36-31), while losing to Iceland (32-26). Montenegro, on the other hand, had a successful series against Bosnia and Herzegovina, winning 36-25 and drawing 37-37 in their recent tests.
As the tournament unfolds, the competition in Group D, which includes Switzerland and the Faroe Islands, adds an extra layer of intrigue. Both teams understand the stakes, and while Slovenia holds a historical advantage, Montenegro is eager to prove itself on this grand stage. With the match set to kick off at 18:00 local time, all eyes will be on the court as these two sides clash in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
