Former President Donald Trump drew significant attention and controversy after he performed an impression of a transgender weightlifter during a speech at the House GOP’s annual retreat on March 3, 2024. His remarks, which included mimicking a female athlete struggling to lift weights, were shared on social media and elicited a range of reactions.

The clip, disseminated by the White House’s “Rapid Response 47” account on X, featured Trump stating, “My wife HATES when I do this,” as he launched into his impression. He referenced his wife, Melania Trump, who he claimed disapproves of both his dancing and weightlifting mimicry. Trump’s performance involved exaggerated grunting and gestures, culminating in a dramatic portrayal of a weightlifter “dropping the thing” and “walking off the stage crying.”

Critics quickly responded to the impression, with many questioning the appropriateness of Trump’s comments during a political event. One user on X noted, “He’s mimicking women weightlifting & talking about transitioning women boxing. Hasn’t he something more important to do or talk about?” Another remarked on the “bizarre dimension” of the performance, expressing embarrassment at the spectacle.

Conversely, some supporters praised Trump’s remarks. Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer known for her opposition to transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, shared the clip and expressed her approval, stating, “No, I don’t regret my vote. This is perfect.”

During the same address, Trump claimed that “two transitioned people” had won gold medals in boxing. According to a fact-check by CNN, he was likely referring to Olympic gold medalists Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, both of whom were identified as female at birth and competed as women.

This incident is not isolated; Trump has previously mocked transgender athletes. In May 2023, during a speech at the University of Alabama, he made similar comments, deriding a “failed weightlifter” who transitioned and subsequently broke records in women’s sports.

The political climate surrounding transgender rights has been contentious. Over the past year, the Trump administration has taken steps to roll back protections for transgender and intersex individuals. This includes attempts to ban transgender people from military service, a policy upheld by the Supreme Court amid ongoing legal challenges. Additionally, there have been efforts to prevent citizens from selecting a sex marker on passports that aligns with their gender identity.

Statistics from GLAAD, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, highlight a troubling trend. Between May 1, 2024, and May 1, 2025, GLAAD tracked 932 anti-LGBTQ incidents in the United States, with 52 percent targeting transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. This marks a 14 percent increase in attacks against transgender people compared to the previous year.

As the debate continues online and in political arenas, the implications of Trump’s comments and the broader issues surrounding transgender rights remain at the forefront of national conversation.
