JD Vance, the U.S. Vice President, responded to criticism regarding the Trump administration’s actions in Venezuela, particularly concerning the country’s role in drug trafficking. Critics have argued that these actions are disconnected from the reality of illegal drug production, as Venezuela is not a significant source of the illicit fentanyl that enters the United States.

In a post on social media platform X, Vance emphasized that while fentanyl is a major concern, it is not the only drug affecting the U.S. market. He stated, “First, fentanyl is not the only drug in the world. Yet, fentanyl continues to come from Venezuela (or at least it did until recently). Second, cocaine, which is the primary drug trafficked from Venezuela, is the source of profits for all Latin American drug cartels. If we cut off their cocaine revenue (or at least reduce it), we significantly weaken the cartels as a whole. And cocaine is bad,” highlighting the dual threat of both drugs to American society.

Vance’s comments come as former President Donald Trump has defended his administration’s strategies in Venezuela by linking the country’s political turmoil to the broader drug trade that has resulted in numerous deaths across the United States. He noted that fentanyl is often manufactured within U.S. borders or intercepted at the southwestern border with Mexico.

Recognizing Mexico’s role in fentanyl trafficking, Vance said that the administration is focused on stopping this flow. He also addressed public concerns regarding the use of military force in Venezuela. “About 20 years ago, Venezuela expropriated our oil assets and until recently, used that stolen property to enrich itself and fund its narcoterrorist activities. I understand the concern about military force, but should we just allow a communist regime in our hemisphere to steal our property and do nothing? Great powers do not behave that way,” Vance stated.

The issues surrounding drug trafficking and U.S. foreign policy in Venezuela remain contentious. As Vance’s remarks reflect, the fight against drug cartels is intertwined with broader geopolitical strategies, emphasizing the complex relationship between drug enforcement and international relations.
