Trump’s Board of Peace Pledges $5 Billion to Rebuild Gaza

Donald Trump announced that members of his newly formed Board of Peace have committed $5 billion (£3.6 billion) to the reconstruction of Gaza, which has been severely affected by ongoing conflict. This significant pledge will be formally unveiled during the Board’s inaugural meeting in Washington on October 12, 2023. As part of the initiative, the Board will also deploy thousands of personnel for international stabilization and police forces in the region.

In a social media post, Trump expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The Board of Peace will prove to be the most consequential International Body in History, and it is my honor to serve as its Chairman.” While he did not specify which nations will contribute to the reconstruction efforts or personnel allocations, the commitment from Indonesia’s military stands out. The Indonesian government has indicated that up to 8,000 troops could be ready for deployment by the end of June as part of a humanitarian and peace mission.

Challenges in Gaza Reconstruction

Rebuilding Gaza presents a formidable challenge. According to estimates from the United Nations, the World Bank, and the European Union, the total cost of reconstruction could reach $70 billion (£51 billion). The recent ceasefire agreement includes provisions for an armed international stabilization force aimed at maintaining security and disarming the militant group Hamas, a primary demand from Israel. However, interest from other countries in joining this proposed force has been limited.

The ceasefire deal, brokered by the United States on October 10, 2023, aimed to end a protracted conflict between Israel and Hamas. While major fighting has decreased, reports indicate that Israeli forces continue to conduct air strikes and engage with Palestinians near military-controlled areas.

The participation of the more than 20 members of the Board of Peace in the initial meeting remains uncertain. Notably, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who met with Trump at the White House last week, is not expected to attend. Initially envisioned as a means to address the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Board’s scope appears to be expanding to encompass broader global issues, reflecting Trump’s desire to reshape the post-World War II international framework.

Rebranding Efforts and Political Implications

Trump’s announcement about the Board of Peace coincides with the confirmation that Thursday’s meeting will occur at the US Institute of Peace, which has recently been renamed the Donald J. Trump US Institute of Peace. This renaming has sparked controversy, as former staff members and executives of the non-profit organization have initiated legal action following the Republican administration’s decision to take control of the facility last year.

The creation of the Board of Peace has raised concerns among many of America’s key allies, particularly in Europe, who suspect it may be an attempt to rival the United Nations Security Council. The lack of participation from these allies could hinder the Board’s effectiveness in addressing international crises, particularly in a region as complex as Gaza.

As the international community awaits the details of the pledges and the outcome of the inaugural meeting, the implications of Trump’s actions and the Board’s future remain to be seen.
