UK’s ‘Benefits Queen’ Cheryl Drew Critiques DWP Policy Changes
Cheryl Drew, known in the UK as the “benefits queen,” has publicly criticized recent changes proposed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) regarding welfare support. Previously, Drew claimed approximately £60,000 annually for her 15 children, but she now expresses disagreement with the Labour Party’s plan to abolish the two-child benefit cap.
Drew, aged 43, has transitioned from relying on government support to becoming a tax-paying entrepreneur. In comments reported by The Sun, she stated, “handouts don’t always help,” and expressed discontent with Labour’s approach, particularly targeting Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves. “I can’t believe what Rachel Reeves has done. She’s going backwards, not moving mums forwards,” Drew added.
The term “benefits queen” is often associated with Drew due to her previous claims, which included both welfare payments and a part-time job as a cleaner, working 16 hours per week. Following her separation from her former husband, Drew emphasizes the importance of self-sufficiency, asserting that the benefits cap was “the making of [her].”
Personal Transformation and Business Ventures
Drew’s transformation into a self-sufficient individual has inspired many. According to a source cited by The Sun, “Suddenly she had all those kids to feed and decreasing money to do it. She rolled up her sleeves and grafted hard for what she’s got.” Friends of Drew highlight her pride in her accomplishments and her desire for other mothers to experience similar empowerment.
“She wants other mums who are like she was to have that feeling. To know they are paying their way,” one friend remarked. Drew’s journey took a significant turn when she met her current husband, with whom she launched a mobile laser tattoo removal service during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her view, government policies should encourage rather than discourage personal initiative. “Cheryl has gone out to work and inspired her children to work hard too—at whatever it is they do,” a close associate said. “But that’s not going to happen if the Government makes them richer by staying at home to have more babies. It’s not fair because these decisions can make or break lives.”
Reflections on Government Support
Despite her criticisms of current policies, Drew acknowledges the essential role that benefits can play for many families. “I think she’d be the last person to say she’s anti-benefits—they serve an important purpose. She knows there are lots of mums out there with no option,” a friend explained.
Drew’s story serves as a reminder of the complex realities surrounding welfare systems and their impact on individual lives. She has not only built a successful business but also had three more children during this journey, a testament to her determination and resilience.
As discussions around welfare reform continue, Drew’s insights may resonate with many who face similar challenges, illustrating the fine line between support and self-sufficiency in today’s society.
