Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, revealed he considered resigning from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during the launch of his new book, *Headlines & Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration*. The event took place in Abuja on December 17, a date chosen to honor Buhari’s memory on his posthumous birthday.

In his address, Mohammed provided insights into some pivotal moments of his tenure, stating that his book offers a detailed account of his experiences and decisions while serving as minister. He highlighted a particularly challenging period, which almost led to his resignation. The decision to launch the book on December 17 came after he shifted the original date from December 6, coinciding with his own birthday, following the death of Buhari on July 13, 2025.

“I began writing the book in June 2025 and never imagined that President Buhari would not be with us today,” Mohammed stated. He dedicated the book’s first chapter to Buhari, explaining that readers would understand the significance of this tribute upon reading.

Mohammed underscored his role as the longest-serving minister of information and culture in Nigeria’s history, emphasizing that the book documents his efforts across multiple sectors, including Information, Culture, Tourism, and National Orientation. It aims to correct misconceptions and provide context while preserving vital historical accounts.

The former minister addressed speculation regarding the intent behind the book, asserting, “Did you write this book to defend the legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari? My answer is simple, as the saying goes: the truth needs no defence.” He noted that during the final months of Buhari’s administration, his team documented achievements through the *Scorecard Series*, creating a legacy portal, *pmbscorecard.gov.ng*, to highlight these accomplishments.

Mohammed expressed confidence that Buhari, having served under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), would be remembered kindly by history. He also extended support to the current president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging continued backing for his administration.

“If there is one key takeaway I hope readers will gain from this book, it is this: the way an administration communicates can define its legacy as much as the policies it implements,” he elaborated.

The book launch featured a keynote address from former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, who emphasized the need for constitutional amendments, including a proposal for a single term for elected executives to foster inclusivity in governance.

The event was attended by notable figures, including former first lady Aisha Buhari, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Mr. Boss Mustapha, and Oyo State Governor Mr. Seyi Makinde. The book was reviewed by Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, Chairman of the *THISDAY* Editorial Board, further adding to the event’s significance.

Through this publication, Mohammed aims not only to document his experiences but also to provide a nuanced view of an administration that has often faced criticism, while celebrating the enduring legacy of a former leader.
