Andrew Lamb, the chief technology officer (CTO) and co-founder of Delta.g, a quantum gravity sensor company based in Birmingham, has played a pivotal role in advancing quantum gravity gradiometers. These devices have reached significant milestones, including the first industry-developed quantum gravity sensor delivered under contract to the UK Department for Transport. Delta.g was recently awarded the 2025 qBIG prize by the Institute of Physics, recognizing its contributions to the commercialization of quantum technologies in the UK and Ireland.

Lamb, alongside colleagues Jonathan Winch and Benjamin Adams, also received the prestigious 2025 Clifford Paterson Medal and Prize from the Institute for their achievement in commercializing a quantum sensor for gravity gradients and demonstrating its relevance to transport applications.

Understanding Quantum Sensors and Their Applications

A quantum sensor combines multiple components that work together to measure gravity with unparalleled precision. This includes a sensor head that contains atoms isolated from environmental interference, a laser system to probe quantum structures, electronics for power and timing, and software to analyze the data. As the CTO, Lamb emphasizes the need for expertise across these domains in order to build, develop, and maintain these intricate devices.

In a rapidly evolving field like quantum metrology, Lamb underscores the importance of evidence-based decision-making. He explained that critical analysis of information is essential, particularly when the optimal solutions may not be immediately apparent.

“Challenges arise that may never have been solved before,” he noted. “The best way to address these is to explore the ‘why and how’ of phenomena. Once the root cause is identified, a creative solution must be sought, whether that involves innovating something entirely new or borrowing from other disciplines.”

Lamb finds fulfillment in the continuous learning opportunities his role provides. “When you surround yourself with experts, the chances to learn are limitless,” he said. Before co-founding Delta.g, he honed his technical skills as a researcher at the University of Birmingham. Transitioning to a start-up environment, he realized the value of a multidisciplinary team in overcoming operational, regulatory, and technical hurdles to introduce groundbreaking products to the market.

As CTO, Lamb operates at the intersection of technical expertise and commercial strategy. This dual responsibility requires him to translate commercial milestones into scientific plans and effectively communicate progress to non-experts. He acknowledges that this can be challenging, especially when conveying complex scientific achievements in an accessible manner.

Reflecting on his career journey, Lamb shared that for a long time, he was uncertain about his direction. “I used to worry that not having a clear purpose would hinder my progress,” he admitted. “Now, I understand that it’s more beneficial to focus on developing versatile skills that can open doors. Whether technical, managerial, or commercial, no knowledge is ever wasted.”

Lamb also wishes he had recognized earlier the importance of being open to new opportunities. Each significant career decision, from switching from civil engineering to pursuing a physics degree to co-founding Delta.g, stemmed from a willingness to embrace change. “Being flexible and curious matters far more than having everything mapped out from the beginning,” he concluded.
