Inverness Veterinary Centre Hosts Open Day for Public Engagement
A pioneering research facility in Inverness, the Rural and Veterinary Innovation Centre (RAVIC), is opening its doors to the public on November 13, 2024. This innovative centre focuses on advancing health in both animals and humans. Visitors can explore various aspects of veterinary science, including post-mortem facilities, CPR demonstrations for dogs, and microscopic examinations of parasites.
Engaging Activities and Educational Opportunities
The open day, titled “People, Pets and Pathogens,” runs from 10:00 to 15:00. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet experts from Scotland’s animal disease surveillance team, who are actively assessing global health threats. In the post-mortem room, veterinary professionals from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) will provide insights into their critical role in diagnosing and monitoring animal diseases.
Future veterinarians and scientists are encouraged to speak with SRUC’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences staff about educational pathways and career opportunities. In addition, Scottish Vet Referrals will lead demonstrations on canine CPR and address general pet care inquiries.
Visitors will also learn about the impact of antimicrobial resistance in pets, a study that aims to enhance both human and animal health. Opportunities to engage with agricultural specialists and sample innovations in the sector will be available, while those with an interest in aquaculture can explore topics related to gill health and the integration of artificial intelligence in veterinary practices.
Investment and Development in Veterinary Research
RAVIC was established with an investment of £12.5 million, aimed at fostering innovation and generating jobs within Scotland’s health, agriculture, and aquaculture sectors. This facility was developed by Scotland’s Rural College with funding support from the European Regional Development Fund and the Scottish Funding Council. The centre was officially inaugurated by Princess Anne in March 2024, marking a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to veterinary and agricultural advancements.
The open day promises to be an informative and engaging experience for individuals of all ages, highlighting the vital intersection of veterinary science, public health, and agricultural innovation. As RAVIC opens its doors, it paves the way for deeper community involvement and understanding of contemporary veterinary challenges and solutions.
