Gattuso Faces Pressure as Italy Eyes World Cup Playoff Spot
Gennaro Gattuso, the manager of the Italy national football team, expressed a strong emotional response regarding the team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following a series of victories, Gattuso indicated that failure to secure a spot in the tournament could lead him to “live far away from Italy.” This statement underscores the pressure he feels as he leads a team that has not qualified for the World Cup for the past two tournaments.
Since taking the helm in June, Gattuso has revitalized Italy’s prospects. The recent win against Israel marked the team’s fourth consecutive victory under his leadership and secured a position in the qualification playoffs. “I’ll take credit if I manage to achieve the goal, otherwise I’ll go and live far away from Italy,” Gattuso, 47, stated. He currently resides in Marbella, Spain, and hinted he may have to relocate even further if the team fails to meet expectations.
Italy’s journey towards the World Cup continues with crucial matches ahead. The team is currently three points behind Group I leaders Norway. Italy will play against Moldova on November 13, 2023, before hosting Norway three days later in their final group qualifier. The outcome of these matches will be pivotal in determining their qualification for the tournament, which will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Despite the high stakes, Gattuso expressed his honor in coaching the four-time World Cup champions. “I’ve said it before, it is a dream to be here,” he remarked, acknowledging the responsibility of leading the team. He credited the players for their success, stating, “I didn’t think I’d lead the team to 16 goals, but the credit goes to the players. I have little credit.”
Gattuso’s remarks reflect a blend of determination and humility. He recognizes the hard work and dedication required from the team, indicating, “We need to continue on this path. Yes, we work so hard and we sleep so little, but we do this, too, because when the victories come, it feels very good.”
As the qualification matches approach, the footballing world will be watching closely to see if Gattuso can guide Italy back to the World Cup stage. The pressure is palpable, but with his leadership and the team’s recent performance, there remains hope for a successful outcome.
