Gerri Colombe Gears Up for Comeback as Elliott Sets Ambitious Goals
Gerri Colombe is preparing for a return to competitive racing, with trainer Gordon Elliott acknowledging the nine-year-old gelding will need to elevate his performance to contend in the prestigious Gold Cup. The horse, who finished second to Galopin Des Champs in the Cheltenham event in March 2024, has been sidelined for over a year due to a stifle injury. Although the injury was not severe, it occurred at a critical moment in his training schedule.
During a media visit to his stables at Cullentra on Monday, Elliott provided an update on Gerri Colombe’s condition. “He’s in good form; he’s cantering away this morning. It’s probably going to be Christmas realistically before we get him out,” he stated. The horse is expected to have an entry at Leopardstown, but Elliott hinted that Tramore might be a more suitable starting point for Gerri Colombe’s comeback.
The trainer emphasized the need for improvement, saying, “I think he’s going to have to up his game to be a Gold Cup horse. He looks good, he’s moving well, and he’s in great form.” Despite his past success, Elliott remains realistic about the challenges ahead, noting that Gerri Colombe will need to demonstrate significant progress to compete at the highest level again.
Wodhooh Shines as Elliott’s Star Performer
Meanwhile, one of Elliott’s standout performers this season has been Wodhooh, who recently won the Ascot Hurdle. Elliott expressed his satisfaction with her performance, stating, “I was delighted with her; she was very good. She just does what she has to do.” Wodhooh’s versatility allows for a range of potential entries in upcoming Grade One events, including options at Doncaster and Windsor in mid-January.
Elliott has not ruled out ambitious plans for Wodhooh, saying, “This morning I’d say the mares’ race should be where she’ll be going, but the Stayers’ Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle aren’t out of the question.” He noted her laid-back demeanor and ability to perform under pressure, remarking that she is stronger and better this season compared to last.
Exciting Prospects for Other Horses in Elliott’s Yard
Another horse in Elliott’s stable, Brighterdaysahead, is gearing up for her debut over fences. Although her preparations have been slightly delayed due to a minor injury, Elliott is optimistic about her potential. “We missed a week with her, so Fairyhouse might come quick enough for her. I’d imagine it will be Christmas before we start her off,” he explained.
In addition, Teahupoo is on course to compete for a third consecutive victory in the Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse this Sunday. Elliott confirmed, “Teahupoo will definitely go; he’s in great form.” Initially considering a run at Ascot for the Long Walk, he decided to prioritize the Fairyhouse event due to the current ground conditions.
Finally, Romeo Coolio has already made a mark after winning on his debut and is set to participate in the Bar One Racing Drinmore Novice Chase this Sunday at Fairyhouse. Elliott is confident in the six-year-old’s abilities, stating, “I think two and a half is his trip; he could come back to two miles, but two and a half is his trip.”
As the season unfolds, Elliott’s stable shows promise with several horses on the brink of competitive action, making it an exciting time for fans and followers of the sport.
