Former Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga has secured a position at Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur as an assistant coach to Thomas Frank. This move comes just two months after Heitinga’s departure from Ajax, where he was dismissed following a challenging start in the Eredivisie.

Heitinga, who served as an assistant at Anfield for one year, was part of the coaching team that led Liverpool to a Premier League title last season. His tenure at Ajax, however, proved less successful. He took charge in the summer but faced significant struggles, winning only four of his eleven matches in the Eredivisie while failing to secure a victory in the Champions League. Technical director Alex Kroes expressed the club’s disappointment in a statement, saying, “It’s a painful decision. We know it can take time for a new coach to work with a squad that has undergone changes.”

Despite the setback at Ajax, Heitinga has returned to the Premier League, where he will contribute to Frank’s coaching staff. Frank welcomed Heitinga’s arrival, stating, “John is a great addition to our coaching staff. His ability, personality and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch.” Frank highlighted Heitinga’s impressive playing career, which included five years in the Premier League and time with the Dutch national team.

As a former defender, Heitinga’s primary responsibilities will likely focus on defensive strategies during training sessions. His experience from various levels of football, including a stint at West Ham United under David Moyes, further enhances his qualifications for this role. Reflecting on his previous experiences in the English top flight, Heitinga remarked, “I got to work with two coaches of which one has been around for a long time, and the other one got to continue Jürgen Klopp‘s legacy. I think, together, we built something wonderful there last season.”

This season, Liverpool has already faced Tottenham once, securing a 2-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with goals from Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike. The two clubs are set to meet again on March 14, 2024, at Anfield, although the date is subject to change due to broadcast selections.

With Heitinga’s arrival, Tottenham aims to strengthen their coaching team as they navigate a competitive Premier League season. His blend of experience and fresh perspective may provide the club with the impetus needed to advance their ambitions this season.
