UConn Dominates Iowa 90-64 with Stellar Performances from Fudd and Strong
In a commanding performance, the top-ranked UConn Huskies triumphed over the 11th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes with a score of 90-64 during the Women’s Champions Classic held in New York on December 16, 2023. The victory improved UConn’s record to 12-0, maintaining their unbeaten status as they approach the holiday season.
Azzi Fudd was a standout player for UConn, contributing significantly to the team’s success with a remarkable 27 points. Her teammate, Sarah Strong, also delivered an impressive performance, adding 23 points, alongside seven rebounds and six steals. This victory showcased UConn’s depth and talent as they continue to dominate in the NCAA.
Strong’s impact was particularly evident in the first half, where she scored 20 points and made five steals, leading UConn to a 42-31 halftime advantage. After establishing a strong lead of 22-12 following the first quarter, the Huskies faced a brief challenge as Iowa narrowed the gap to six points in the second quarter. However, Strong quickly responded, scoring seven points during a pivotal 10-2 run that pushed UConn’s lead to 35-20.
The Hawkeyes struggled to regain momentum after that, unable to come closer than nine points for the remainder of the game. Fudd took control in the second half, scoring 21 of her 27 points after halftime. UConn opened the third quarter with six unanswered points, effectively sealing their victory.
UConn’s win highlighted their strength against ranked opponents this season, having previously defeated teams such as No. 5 Michigan, No. 16 Louisville, and No. 19 Southern California. The Huskies are set to face two more ranked teams in January, with home games against the No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers and No. 20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
On the other side, the Iowa Hawkeyes, now with a record of 10-2, faced challenges in their recent games, losing two out of three, including a defeat to in-state rival No. 10 Iowa State. Hannah Stuelke and Chazadi Wright led the Hawkeyes with 17 and 16 points respectively.
The doubleheader also featured No. 16 Louisville, who convincingly defeated No. 17 Tennessee with a score of 89-65. Iowa will look to bounce back as they prepare to host Penn State on December 28, while UConn will travel to face Butler on the same day.
